Words left unsaid

Conflict is something every story needs and has, whether the writer realizes it or not. Though discussing the different types of conflict would be an immense waste of time for us all, it is important to know what and where the elements of your story are working.

Today, in conjunction with the discussion above, write a tale of someone who resolves a conflict in their head, even as the real scene playing out in front of them may be radically different. Much like the pervasive "winning arguments after they end" mentality that many have, create the scene where you've got the chance to play the hero, but only do so in your mind.

Obviously, this can leave you in many different situations, such as a robbery gone wrong, or a traffic stop. You'll all have better settings than these basic ones, but for starters, think about any unconscious physical actions the character takes, the actions of others around them, and thoughts before and after the scene. Have fun!
