How to politely extricate myself from interesting but time wasting non-work conversations?

So many conversations in this company start out as perfectly reasonable work conversations, but quickly devolve into holiday stories or personal anecdotes. Not that I mind, but occasionally I like to work too. How to interrupt the flow and signal "We should stop chatting now"?
