Has anybody ever had any luck discouraging an armadillo from digging up the yard/garden?
I've got an armadillo (or two at least - one larger than the other) that have repeatedly made their rounds digging up the yard/garden/landscaping areas looking for what I think are grubs or worms of some type in the moistened soil after I water or after it rains (which is seldom in my locale in Central Texas).
I've tried the peppery animal-off deterrents with some success, but I determined that I pretty much have to apply it after each watering and almost every other day to really keep the pesky armadillo from digging up flowers and uprooting plants.
I literally just fended off the armadillo (I don't want to hurt the animal) with a water hose after it didn't budge when I personally walked up on it and tried to scare it (first response was to do a hysterical 180° jump maneuver), but with little success after the first attempt. It really could care less that I was right next to it. I even started poking its hard shell with a long bamboo pole and it didn't really care much. I finally flipped it over with the pole to try and get its attention, but it just righted itself and kept on searching for grubs/worms until I got the hose out and sprayed it down as it finally scurried off.
I was thinking about that as seen on TV animal repellent by Bell + Howell that uses high frequency sound to deter animals. It works on a solar charge and is discreet in appearance within the yard, but considering the persistence and general tenacity of this particular armadillo, I'm not sure it would care much at all.
In any case, if you don't know of a better method of deterring the armadillo, do you know of any services for animal extraction to take the animal out to the countryside somewhere rather than his more urban oasis that it lives upon right now.
Essentially, there's about a couple of acres of greenspace that surrounds the neighorhood that is a habitat for everything from feral and stray cats and even a pack of stray dogs, to opossums, raccoons, skunks, and armadillos. There aren't any deer, but the other pests (especially the raccoons and armadillos) really cause a ruckus tearing up the yard (armadillo) and fighting each other (raccoons) while also digging up container plants searching for water during dry spells in the summertime (raccoons also).
