Taking Mineralogy/Optical Mineralogy this fall. Need study techniques!

Alright so I am going to have to memorize around 300 minerals along with their chemical formula and distinct properties. I am a theoretical kind of person and struggle with straight fact memorization. Any tips/tricks to help memorize these kind of facts besides flashcards?

Any help would be Gneiss. =P
