What can/should we do about the political situation here in America?

Inspired by this article and the recent events of, well, really the last twelve years, I'm realizing that here in America, we very well may be in the last throws of our democracy. You all have seen the posts here on reddit about the huge under-class we have and the too-powerful rich, but what should we do? Should we protest more? Write our congresspeople? I try to write a letter weekly to a congressperson (either in my district or outside of), but is that really what's needed?

I feel the answer lies within uniting the more "liberal" groups in America who believe that private wealth has too much controlling interest in our government with the "conservative" groups who believe that the government is becoming too powerful. We're both right! The government is becoming too powerful in order to protect the interests of the rich! We must figure out how to unite and put an end to this.

Now....what should we do?
