Just gave blood. Why does the pre-giving questionnaire involve questions about male homosexual sexual encounters?

I get that they are trying to avoid HIV/AIDS and other STI's, but isn't this a bit uhhhh offensive.

edit: also I am a female. They asked if I had any sexual encounters with a male who had ever had sexual encounters with another male. seems a little overboard imo. but if i am wrong, enlighten me.
