It is all in your head.

It is time for bed. I walk slowly to my room, tired from the day’s activities. I approach my bed, peering over my shoulder with the feeling that something is there. I reach my bedside keeping my feet as far away as possible from the darkness underneath, just enough so I can reach the safeness and security of the covers. I lay in bed, still, but the slight rustling of the tree outside my window keeps me awake, yet, there is no wind tonight. I cannot manage up the courage to peer outside. I crawl farther and farther under my covers as though they are my shield against everything which might come against me. I insist that my mind is playing tricks and I need to look outside to prove to myself that I am alone. I am scared but muster up what courage I have, “One… Two… Three…” I jump up from my bed and turn around, sitting on my knees while peering out my window. Silence. I feel a cold, moist breeze glance my shoulder. I immediately fall down under the covers and pull my head under not daring to look. “Nonsense,” I say to myself “there is nothing there, it is all in your head.” I peek out from under the covers. Silence and darkness enshroud me, I am constantly on guard, sensing every movement and noise. I feel watched, but it is elusive and I can’t get sight of it. The feeling of a tall dark presence at the end of my bed suppresses my thoughts. With my tiredness overwhelming me, my eyes are slowly closing and I am drifting in and out of consciousness. I try to ignore it, but as I pass out cold from exhaustion I hear a whisper, “It is all in your head.”
