Is buying second hand DVDs any more ethical or supportive of the industry than torrenting?

I prefer dvd ripping to cloud/stream services due to portability of the files. I would gladly pay $5-10 for movies that are not new releases, but that isn't always available. Used DVD prices are more palateable (especially for TV series volumes) but I feel like a white night.
