Why is there not cross-platform multiplayer games?

I was thinking as I'm playing games on Steam, wouldn't they be more fun if you connected playing BF3 with Xbox players, or PS3 players? While I realize that Sony and Microsoft won't play nice together, PC gaming is a pretty broad spectrum that isn't one specific company. Do you think that PC gamers or console gamers would have an advantage for mouse/keyboard or Controller?
