Minecraft's day out

The story: While in the Nether I logged out, when I logged back in, I found myself on top of the layer of bedrock on the top of the Nether. Naturally, my first thought was to build a portal. So a friend and I went through the portal, which popped us out in the middle of the sky. We were also 8000+ blocks away from where we came from originally.
