Women vs. women in the culinary world?
i'm not sure exactly how to state this but, what has been your experience with how women treat other women in this industry?
i've only been cooking professionally for a few years and have mostly worked with all male crews. obviously there's a degree of competition but for the most part everyone helps each other out and are (relatively) friendly towards each other.
so here's my story: i've been working at this restaurant with a female head chef for almost 8 months now. i always come in early and stay late. i am there more and longer than any other cook, besides the chefs. in fact, i'm pretty much the only other person they seem to trust with more in depth prep and tasks (and by that i mean making just about everything that you can't cook to order such as sauces, soups, dressings, panisse, duck confit, short ribs etc. etc.). actually, it's kinda fucked up in that none of the line cooks really do their own prep, other than maybe chopping up herbs and shit like that. i also work garde manger on the line. now, i am definitely not trying to say i'm better than anyone and i definitely don't have as much experience as many of the other line cooks, as i'm quite sure they could cook circles around me, but even the sous's agree that i go above and beyond what's asked of me and do more than just about anyone else.
i'm not bothered by the fact that i am never thanked or appreciated by my chef for all this as i am well aware that this is a mostly thankless job, i'm not bothered that i typically work 6-7 days a week whereas everyone else, including the chefs, get at least two days off, it would be fine except for the fact that everyone BUT me is thanked and appreciated for their efforts. my chef is generally pretty laid back and seems to like me all right, but she definitely pays more attention to all the male cooks, takes time to talk and joke and thank them, is more lenient with them. she seems to get annoyed by my mere presence sometimes. i've asked the sous's wtf i'm doing wrong and they just say to ignore it. because of this i mostly keep to myself, and whenever i have a question about plating or anything that would show that i genuinely care about the food and the restaurant she acts fucking bothered.
what really pissed me off recently is we had a new guy start on GM with me, and he's not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer. whenever he fucks up, which is a lot, i'm there to save it, but no one realizes i'm the one to do it. he still doesn't get the fucking ticket sytem down, he see's items listed as a second or third course and starts firing them all at once, despite me explaining it to him dozens of times. he's been there a month and now my chef wants to train him on oven. i've been there 8 months and while i may not be the best i am damn sure i'm better and have more experience than him, why the fuck aren't i being trained on oven?
deep breath
sorry guys, that turned into a bitch fest, but fuck i needed to get that out. i'm the only other woman there besides my chef. there may be some good reasons to keep me on prep and GM, like i stated before, the sous's have told me that they know they can count on me to not fuck up the prep, but i want to learn more, and i want to not be stuck doing the same shit when others who are doing far less are already exceeding me. i have no idea if it has anything to do with me being female but i can't find any other solution. is she threatened by me in some way? i'm a lowly prep/line cook and she's the head fucking chef. i thought we left the middle school drama bullshit out a long time ago, but apparently not.
so i guess i have two questions:
-
am i being taken advantage of here?
-
what's your experience with how women treat other women in the workplace? and what would you suggest be done if it's unfriendly?
