A History of Modern Government

So, I was sitting here, thinking about the presidential elections - fun, I know. Not my point... Anywho, while I know the general positions of the Republicans and the Democrats, my knowledge of the history of the parties is pitiful. In this age of a poorly informed electorate, I felt the least I could do I know the history of the parties and better understand where they come from. So, my question is: What would be, in your opinions, a great reading list for the history of the parties? I would say from early 18th century forward, but I would like a survey of pre-American colonization as well. So, any help would be appreciated.
