Does anyone have some advice on getting to know people in a share house at uni?

I have am going to start my next semester of University (The same level of education as college in the USA I believe as I am from Australia) next month and I don't really know how go up and talk to people. Does any redditer have any suggestions on how to approach people? My room is one of 12 on a floor in which we all share a kitchen/living area and 2 toilets/ showers.

Any help would be great.
