What books helped you learned the basics of photography?

I just bought myself a Nikon D5100 w/18-55mm lens I picked it up abroad in Bangkok ( found a really affordable shop Zoom photography for anyone who needs gear in the area). Now I'm looking for books, hell even my manual would help to understand a bit more (unfortunately because I bought this abroad it is written in Japanese). I would take classes but the nature of my trip here demands that I constantly be on the move. So any advice for a wet eared rookie r/photography?
