I'm worried that something is haunting me from my childhood.
So, I've always been a bit of an introvert. It may be from all the moving around when I was little and not really fitting in. I probably moved over eight times during elementary school alone. Basically I had to entertain myself a lot and would spend a lot of time in my own mind.
I remember a lot of the mind games I'd play with myself to keep myself entertained, building fantasies in my head etc., and this eventually lead to some rather intense dreams and experiences. I would wake up in the middle of the night sometimes, the moon the only light I could see by through my window and I would be extremely tiny. As if everything were hundreds of yards away from me. I'd reach my arm out to try and touch my headstand, or my feet and they'd always be just out of my reach. I could close my eyes, blink, and experience would still be there.
This would happen every so often, and would get more intense. I remember another time waking up with the same small perspective and my cat was in the window sill. I would reach and reach for it but couldn't get to her. Then I remember she would jump down, and back up, and back down. As if caught in a loop. Then it was the first time this happened to me, and the time I started to find these experiences frightening. I started to hear a voice. "The cat is jumping down." It wasn't even remotely scary sounding, just a matter of fact. "The cat is jumping, down." it would say again. Then again, "The cat is jumping, downnn." it would hang on that last word, then I would be met by silence.
I didn't have the waking experiences much more where I felt small and distant. But that, voice, still stuck with me. During the day, I would notice anything odd, anything off, and it would just mock it in placid observation. "The light is turning green, greeeen, greeeeeen." warm and overwhelming, looping in my head, drowning out everything bedsides what it was interested in. This wasn't a common occurrence but something that happened often enough I started to think of myself differently. Sometimes I would talk to it. "Why are you telling me this?" only to have it focus on what I said "Why are youuuuu telling me this? Why arreee youuuuu telllinngggg meee this?".
I recall one day when I was about 10 I was out on one of my dads logging sites playing around a brush pile and it started talking to me again. I had some thought about a friend. Something like "Maybe Travis could play this weekend." and it started "Maayybeee..." and I snapped. I looked around to make sure nobody could see me and I said out loud "Shut up and go away I don't want you talking to me ever again." to my surprise, it actually stopped.
I've since grown up and for a long time wrote those experiences off a childhood imagination, or perhaps part of early development given how young I was when it started. I stayed put and made plenty of friends, graduated, etc. The mocking voice never once made a reappearance. Of course, until I just moved again. I have no idea what triggered it, but being much older now I'm of course feeling like there is something wrong with me. But this time it's a bit different than when I was a child. When I was a child it was an overbearing observer. But now, it's a little more active. It's been telling me things, reminding me things. For example the first time it hit me I was late leaving for work and couldn't find my keys. I recall that I let my friend use them to get something out of my car and then I panicked thinking that he must have taken then home with him. Then it hit me "the chaiiir, the chaiiiirrrrrrr." in it's calm but painfully overbearing voice. I shook my head and then went over to my chair. I didn't see the keys and then it repeated "the chaiiirr". I pulled the cushion up and there were my fucking keys. I had no idea they were there, and it was the first time this freaked me out. The first time it didn't feel like some weird thought game I made up as a child.
The second time I couldn't write it off as just something wrong with me. I was sitting at home watching some TV and it just loudly filled me head out of nowhere. "She's calling, Sheeees calllingg, SHEEE" and then it stopped and my phone rang. I just sat there petrified as it buzzed on the table. I reached for it and it was my aunt who I haven't talked to in ages wanting to catch up. I was relieved to talk to someone and it help subside the pounding in my chest, but this is when it started to get frightening.
Over the last two days it's been increasing and really concerning me, more than it did when I was a child, and the things it's saying are freaking me the fuck out. It's having more and more of its own personality. Saying things like "I haaaateee the red ones" as I'm walking down the street and then from behind me a red car passes. Or "I liked it betterrrrr, when we didn't move. When weeee didnt mmmmmmove."
It's late now, two in the morning, and I can't fucking sleep because last night that distant small feeling came over me when I woke up. Only there isn't a window and moonlight where I am now. It took me a bit to get oriented. Thinking I just woke up I reached out for my phone and was able to turn it on but when the screen lit up it was so tiny, so distant. I reached for my lamp but I couldn't. Then my blood ran cold, it took me back to when this happened as a child and I had a single thought "this is when it joined me" and I started to panic and looked around my room. It was cold, distant, barely illuminated by my phone and then at the foot of my bed was a small, round, dark face peering next to my feet. It barely moved, but I could just catch the glimmer of its skin when I moved my phone. Then I looked lower and in two hollow sockets were yellow empty eyes and the voice filled my head "I'veeee seeeennnn youuuuu".
My heart nearly exploded out of my throat and I sat straight up, normal, in my room. I haven't slept since. I don't want to see it again.
