Question about the game Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 2

When you choose a character to fight as in free battle mode and you go over a character, what do the logs mean and what do they do? I have a ps3, so when you scroll over a character, you have the option of pressing L1 and logs will come out. Answers are greatly appreciated.
