Fire Red team?

So I've never played through Fire Red before. I was just wondering which Pokemon you guys would recommend I use.

I started with Squirtle and just got the first gym badge. So far I have a Pikachu that I found in the Viridian Forest and a Pidgey. What else do you guys recommend I use?
