"Friendzone"

So, I find myself more and more annoyed with a trope that seems to be popping up more and more these days. Its espesially prevelant on reddit, but also came to light in a movie a few years ago starring Ryan Reynolds. That movie was called "just friends". So naturally, the trope is the "friendzone".

Maybe It's just me, and I'm some kind of strange minority of person, but I grew up with my parents telling me that they are best friends. They didn't meet that way, but the image sticks. So imagine if you will, a person who is looking for a particular set of qualities in someone that he or she wants to be around. Would it make sense to befriend this person first? I thought so, but I still don't know. The real friendzone isn't about sex, or whats owed to someone for "being a friend" (which is not a service, and therfore not a transaction). The real friendzone is a place you put yourself, because you've gotten close to someone, someone you trust implicitly who you could tell everything to, and care about greatly, someone who cares about you, and is interested in you. So, being familiar with the chemistry you already have, remember your parents and thier inate friendship. Feelings begin to grow and suddenly you begin think about how nice she is, and how she's always there for you, and how you want to always be there for her. Even when she dates other guys, and tells you how much she wishes they were like you while you wish you were them, and when you do decide to take the leap of faith and tell her, the person that you trust the most in the world, who you have been told what a great guy you are, and how any girl would be lucky to have you, and you think that maybe with any luck, that girl can be her, and you can be the lucky one...

And then, she tells you that even though you had the best of intentions and in no way plan on "ruining" anything, she just doesn't want to ruin your friendship.

You can't blame her, because you love her, and care about her, and you decide friendship with her would be better than nothing. Its natural for her to have that response, because there have been some bad breakups in the past, and you learn things about a person that maybe you never intended on learning. But that doesnt stop the fact that by rejecting you when you were the most vulnerable it put something painful in you, a pain that you feel every time you see her, and even though you still have those feelings, and love the time you spend with her, you tell yourself that to act on them again, would be selfish, so you live with your pain like a martyr and maybe you meet someone else.

That's what it is, its defeat, complete and total surrender to your most favorite person in the world, who thinks you make a great court jester, but not a prince.

TL;DR: fucking read it you Ponce, it's worth your time
