Final Fantasy

Looking to get into Final Fantasy - I have next to no experience with the games, tried FF7 but I feel like I should start from the beginning.

Are the stories interconnected?

I have been playing FF Tactics Advance on my GBA recently (2hrs in..) and have ordered FF1 & 2 Dawn of Souls for GBA - is this a good place to start?
