Malzahar Questions

I bought Malzahar and have been trying him out I have a question though is he still a viable AP or should I go onto a different AP instead of Malzahar. He is an awesome champion just by the style of play he has but i don't know if he has the ability to be as good as other AP's. Any incite on this issue would be very helpful, thank you.
