Am I in the wrong here? Is my usage of the indicative conditional that difficult for other people to understand?

As of this writing, I am currently sitting at +2 -11 votes on an article because evidently people are inferring it to mean something which I didn't write, nor did I even think would be difficult for people to understand. To me, it was the most natural way of phrasing something as a native English speaker, but am I the only one who actually uses past tense conditionals to actually be conditionals?
