Thinking of moving to Canada within the coming 5 years or so, I have some concerns though.

Hi! I'm a newly graduated student from gymnasium (eqv. of college I guess) and I'm about to enroll to uni this fall. I'm currently living in Sweden, and while I do love Sweden and I've probably grown incredibly spoiled, I still feel like I wanna go out into the world and whatnot.

So far, I've lived together with my girlfriend who lives in the UK for off and on a year now. And while I do like UK (everything is dirt-cheap compared to Sweden, wtf?), there are some small things that just don't feel right. Like the surveillance, the job-seekers etc.

I also don't feel very safe when I'm outside (and sometimes not inside at night either), but that might just be the place where I'm living (outside of Crawley). Fun story, a week or so ago I heard someone screaming somewhere outside, I thought it sounded really weird. The scream was really desperate but since it never occurred to me that it might be something serious (it would NEVER happen where I live in Sweden), I just thought that it was some argument at home or something, idk. Anyway, the next day I found out that it was actually someone who got robbed and stabbed and was screaming for help. That really phased me to be honest.

Anyway, back to what I was trying to come at. Canada has interested me in many ways, and my interest for it has grown for many years. I don't know much about Canada besides documentaries (Michael Moore and other stuff, not about Canada but documentaries that just happen to bring up Canada as a good example of doing things right), so maybe my view is biased. I'm interested in the fact that it has one of the biggest LGBT-scenes in the world, lots of clubs and party-places, the fact that people seem to be awfully nice there (Canada's 'negative' stereotype is that you are too nice, I mean, wtf?), and that it's one of the more progressive/socialist-democratic countries in the world. Also the fact that crime-rates are pretty low is something that's good for me (I'm a scaredy-cat to be honest). And your accents are so gosh-darn cute.

From what I've gathered though, is that it's not so unlike Sweden, with the socialist reforms, healthcare and general attitude. If you don't know anything about Sweden I guess you can't really compare and enlighten me though.

I would like to live there for a while, just to see how things go. Maybe do couch-surfing or find a swell dude who'll take me in. (or gal, idk)

However, as neat as I think Canada is, I do have some concerns. My biggest issue (so far, like I said, I don't really know the more negative aspects of Canada) is probably internet connection. From living in Sweden I'm incredibly spoiled when it comes to internet. Even though I've mostly had 24mb/s when in my permanent home, I have 100mb/s whenever I go to mom's, with reasonable prices as well. Unlimited internet is another thing that I've grown accustomed too (and no throttling/reduction of speed either). (15mb/s with 75GB limit for $50/month?! Idk if Bell are any good, was just the first one I found.)

From what I've gathered with Canadian providers, you only have a limited amount of GB every month which you can use, and if you go over you'll pay hefty fines? And some providers will cut you off/send you a nasty email if you download illegal stuff?

Now, I'm not so concerned about speed. I currently have (and I've had it for almost a year now) only 10mb/s, and it really isn't more than I'd need either. My concern is with the limits and the risk of lawsuits or whatnot (however, if that's the case I might as well just get a cheap anonymizer). I have steam and A LOT of games, and I also download loads of music, movies and games (as well as watching youtube etc etc) so I'm concerned that I'd hit a 75gb limit well before the month is over, rendering me without internet or with a hefty bill.

However, if push comes to shove and everything else interests me about Canada, I'll just have to deal with it I suppose.

Otherwise, I don't really know what other issues I might have, considering that I don't really know so much about the downsides of Canada. So, I guess my question really is: What's Canada REALLY like? Give me the ups and downs and advice for someone who might be moving there?

Well, this was a very long post, I apologize. Thanks for reading it though!

tl;dr: Swedish guy with a probably biased and glorified view of Canada. I'm thinking of moving there, so I need to hear the real story. Pro's and cons of Canada, and advice for someone who's considering to move there?
