LPT Request: How to keep hairs from not being so itchy/annoying/slightly painful after shaving.

I shave in the mornings, usually during or right after my shower. The shaving itself isn't an issue, I don't think, as my neck/chin end up really smooth. The problems come during the evenings. As the hairs begin to grow back, they itch like crazy and are painful to the touch, specially those in the neck area. Is there something I can do, some specific way to shave? Or am I doomed to deal with this until I can properly grow a beard?
