Welcome to the Libertarian FAQ
Hello and welcome to the Libertarian FAQ.
I know there are plenty of libertarian reddits around now and a new one might seem like overkill but I believe I've identified a genuine niche to be filled and I think you guys are the people to help me fill it!
The Libertarian FAQ is a subreddit specifically created for posing the common (and not so common) objections to libertarianism and then giving everybody else a chance to respond, or you can respond yourself. The best responses will hopefully be voted up to the top.
I've started the ball rolling with an example question and answer with "How would prisons be dealt with in a libertarian society?" and I invite you all to subscribe and pose some more questions and hopefully volunteer some answers.
These Q&As aren't really for our benefit in the moment, but rather for when these objections come up in debate. Having a central place to link people to will make things much easier and more efficient. All the questions that come up constantly:
- Wouldn't all poor children grow up uneducated in a voluntary society?
- How would you stop the sick dying if there wasn't government healthcare?
- What about the roads!?
- What is the non-aggression principle?
- What is the austrian school of economics?
And so on...
I would appreciate it it everybody could at least pose one common question. If you don't have the time to offer a reply as well that's cool. I will try to answer a bunch of them later as best I can but if anybody wants to help and collaborate on this that would be great too. That's what makes Reddit so great... the organic bottom up libertarian nature of it all!
Remember: sometimes a good response would simply be a link to a video or article that already explains things perfectly. We don't need to reinvent the wheel each time. Just have a central place where all these questions are asked and answered!
Once we have a few Q&As going I will create a master thread which I can update over time where all the links to each thread are contained and nicely formatted; it will be a professional place.
Rules: stay as objective as you possibly can. Replies should not contain personal attacks or overly emotional reasoning off the bat. It should be more in the style of Wikipedia. Example:
"Here is a video that explains the NAP. Here's an article which goes into more detail. Some libertarians arrive at the philosophy through utilitarianism and do not agree the NAP is absolute, although they are probably a minority in the movement."
That might not actually be a good answer to the question but I'm trying to demonstrate the tone we should aim for. We're not preaching to the converted here but attempting to give people good answers to common questions.
Imagine that you're in a debate and a common question comes up that you feel you've answered a million times. Hopefully our first thought can be "Let me post that to r/libertarianfaq then reply to my own thread and then link the person I'm talking with to my answer". In this way we will not need to keep repeating ourselves and the base of knowledge in the FAQ will quickly expand!
Thanks in advance to those who feel this is a worthwhile idea and get behind it. You guys are awesome :)
