Division in the Kingsguard (Spoilers Extended)
Division in the Kingsguard
In the past we have seen numerous examples of the Kingsguard being divided in their support/allegiance. I thought it would be fun to take a quick look at the current kingsguard and see where their allegiances may be.
Background
There are numerous examples of the kingsguard being divided in their support:
- Maegor/Jaehaerys
King Maegor’s response was sluggish and confused. ... Two of his Kingsguard vanished one night, to go over to Jaehaerys, and Ser Owen Bush was found dead outside a brothel, his member stuffed into his mouth.
- Dance of the Dragons
Ser Criston Cole. Criston the Kingmaker had set brother against sister and divided the Kingsguard against itself, bringing on the terrible war the singers named the Dance of the Dragons.
- Rhaegar/Aerys
The Current Kingsguard
Jaime Lannister
- Allegiance: King Tommen (his son)
- Location: The Riverlands (chasing "the Hound" w/Brienne)
While Jaime (my favorite character) is known as the Kingslayer, I can't see Jaime ever wanting anything bad to happen to Tommen (although he may wish to get him out of Cersei's hands).
That said Jaime is nowhere near Tommen and his allegiances to other allies (other Lannisters, Freys, etc.) may be tested shortly.
Boros Blount & Meryn Trant
- Allegiance: Cersei Lannister
- Location: King's Landing
Ser Boros and Ser Meryn are the queen's creatures to the bone, and I have deep suspicions of the others. No, my lord, when the swords come out in earnest, you will be the only true friend Robert Baratheon will have." -AGOT, Eddard VII

Robert Strong
- Allegiance: Qyburn (Cersei)
- Location: King's Landing
unGregor has been resurrected by Qyburn and will seemingly fight on Cersei's behalf in her upcoming Trial by Battle against whoever the Faith's Champion may be.
Loras Tyrell
- Allegiance: House Tyrell
- Location: Unknown (potentially dying on Dragonstone)
Ser Loras is "dying" of wounds received from taking Dragonstone. But the Tyrell/Lannister alliance is held together solely by Margaery/Tommen's marriage (an unconsummated marriage can be set aside).
Balon Swann
- Allegiance: King Tommen
- Location: Dorne
Ser Balon (who is down in Dorne chasing Darkstar) seems like a loyal guy. The wildcard in this scenario is his brother Ser Donnel aka Ser Donnel the Constant:
"So he did," said Jaime. "Even so . . . Renly, Stannis, Joffrey, Tommen . . . how did he come to omit Balon Greyjoy and Robb Stark? He might have been the first knight in the realm to swear fealty to all six kings."
Ser Balon's unease was plain. "Donnel erred, but he is Tommen's man now. You have my word."
"It's not Ser Donnel the Constant who concerns me. It's you." Jaime leaned forward. "What will you do if brave Ser Donnel gives his sword to yet another usurper, and one day comes storming into the throne room?
And there you stand all in white, between your king and your blood. What will you do?"
"I . . . my lord, that will never happen."
"It happened to me," Jaime said.
"My lord." Ser Balon drew himself up. "On my sword, on my honor, on my father's name, I swear . . . I shall not do as you did."
Jaime laughed. "Good. Return to your duties . . . and tell Ser Donnel to add a weathervane to his shield." -ASOS, Jaime VIII

Osmund Kettleblack
- Allegiance: Brothers/Littlefinger
- Location: Dungeon of the Red Keep
The dry moat surrounding Maegor's Holdfast was three feet deep in snow, the iron spikes that lined it glistening with frost. The only way in or out of Maegor's was across the drawbridge that spanned that moat. A knight of the Kingsguard was always posted at its far end. Tonight the duty had fallen to Ser Meryn Trant. With Balon Swann hunting the rogue knight Darkstar down in Dorne, Loras Tyrell gravely wounded on Dragonstone, and Jaime vanished in the riverlands, only four of the White Swords remained in King's Landing, and Ser Kevan had thrown Osmund Kettleblack (and his brother Osfryd) into the dungeon within hours of Cersei's confessing that she had taken both men as lovers. That left only Trant, the feeble Boros Blount, and Qyburn's mute monster Robert Strong to protect the young king and royal family.
and:
"Fornication with a queen. His High Holiness says that you confessed to bedding both of them—had you forgotten?"
Her face reddened. "No. What will you do with them?"
"The Wall, if they admit their guilt. If they deny it, they can face Ser Robert. Such men should never have been raised so high."
Please note these are separate from the 6 other prisoners that Qyburn currently has.
Other
A few other characters were at least worth mentioning:
Barristan Selmy
- Allegiance: Daenerys Targaryen
- Location: Slaver's Bay
Currently battling in the Battle of Fire, Ser Barristan has sworn himself to Daenerys Targaryen. That said some great theories do exist about him switching to Aegon (Young Griff).
Jorah Mormont
- Allegiance: Daenerys Targaryen
- Location: Slaver's Bay
Note: Dany also has the allegiance of her kingsguard/bloodrider/kos in Aggo, Jhogo and Rakharo as well as Strong Belwas are noted as members of her queensguard in the ASOS, Appendix.
Sandor Clegane
- Allegiance: Unknown (I think it can be effectively argued a few ways: himself, the Faith, the Elder Brother, previously House Lannister/Cersei/Joffrey)
- Location: The Quiet Isle
While "the Hound" is dead (alive as a Legacy Character), Sandor Clegane is "at rest" and by at rest, I mean he is the grave digger on the Quiet Isle. His return to the story can probably go a few different ways. We do know the Elder Brother is a skilled healer (and potentially a member of House Brune of Brownhollow) and that the Brotherhood without Banners is actively searching for him (last person to see Arya alive).
Brienne of Tarth
- Allegiance: Lady Stoneheart (She has seemingly resworn herself to LSH, after previously swearing herself to Cat)
- Location: The Riverlands (taking Jaime to "the Hound" who has Sansa)
Note: We will likely see more "kingsguard" members pop up as TWoW progresses and some die and others are named (as well as the members of the Brotherhood of the Winged Knights, Aegon VI's Kingsguard (Rolly Duckfield has been named) and potentially Ser Parmen Crane (from Renly's Rainbow Seven) who is held captive at Highgarden.
If you enjoy theories about the kingsguard: Cersei's Involvement in Jaime being named to the Kingsguard & Fun/Unlikely Theory: The Smiling Knight's Identity
TLDR: Due to previous examples of division in the kingsguard, I thought it would be fun to list out all of the members of the kingsguard (and some others) and see where their true allegiance could truly be.
