Poem

We’re so easy to love

when the world has just begun,

and our words are

stuck together

on the tips of our tongues.

Taking their best form in

icicles;

little water droplets traipsing

down the chins of children.

We have secrets now,

and that is all we learned

to live on.

Once upon a time,

we stretched our backs

and bellies so much

that it created scars.

And we called it playtime,

wearing hats

and carrying briefcases;

we stuffed ourselves in them

to preserve what little youth

we had left.

Goodbye daisies,

goodbye little lambs,

goodnight moon.

Nothing is as ever satisfied

as empty stomachs

filling with pride, with dollar signs.

Quiet grumbling from crowds

of hungry men,

and once again,

we find ourselves in them.

Yesterday was nothing like it should’ve been.

We planted seeds in our feet.

And now the fruit we bear

tastes like mold in our greedy mouths.
