Does Adderall have anti allergy effects?

Stimulant Science

I'm curious - I hadn't noticed it yet, but I'm at a place where my snoot always goes crazy, haven't taken my Claritin in a while, and seem to be totally ok.

I believe amphetamine or at least the levo variant used to be sold and used as a decongestant. I may be conflating that with benzedrine, but certainly amphetamines have something in common with ephedrine on a chemical or structural level (I never took organic chemistry so I will make Mark Twain proud and won't open my mouth and remove all doubt). (Edit: for clarity, I was thinking of pseudoephedrine, Sudafed, here, as far as why a resemblance to ephedrine would suggest anti-allergy or decongestant effects)

Is there something there or am I overthinking it and maybe it just makes my nose less runny because it's drying me out a little?

Its not anti allergy it is useful as a decongestant however. My allergies and sinuses always annoy the absolute living shit out of me this time of year and when i take my adderall xr its all good, no more congestion.

Same! It covered my symptoms so well, that I realized I was actually sick on the THIRD day, when it stopped working at all šŸ˜‚

pseudoephedrine and ephedrine act as decongestants by constricting the blood vessels in your sinuses if i'm not mistaken. adderall is also a vasoconstrictor so it's definitely not unthinkable that it would do that. it's certainly not anti-allergy in the sense of like an antihistamine though

Yes

Yeah that’s one annoying thing I hate about them. This I assume at least causes the flem, muccus to just find it’s way all the way down to the bottom of my lungs and just sit until it starts to make me gag from coughing with no breakup. But a decongestant clears most of it up. Being a smoker has nothing that contributes to this for me🤨 ha

Now that I think of it, my allergy symptoms have been much more mild this past month on adderall, I wonder if it’s because of that

Adderall increases levels of catecholamines in the bloodstream which can exert a nasal-decongestant effect.

Stuff like this is why I wish I took organic chemistry. If I'd had Adderall in college maybe I would have lol. You said catecholamines and it sounded like something I remembered, which turns out to be, acetylcholine. Now I'm like "what is choline." It sounds like cholamine would be choline + amine somehow. I looked up what an amine is because of amphetamines, but I only remember it was something ammonia Ish. Wish I understood how this all fits together. Oh well, I guess some people feel that way about law and at least I know what a demurrer/rule 12(b)(6) motion is if not a fucking amine lol.

Not o-chem, just pharmacology. ;)

organic chemistry is just chemistry with organic materials. you are looking for the science of what chemicals actually do in the human body, which is pharmacology

I wish I understood a thing you said in general. aka didn't skip ALL my high school classes. lol. kudos to you and your effin brain lol!

Or actually noradrenaline(norepinephrine) and dopamine. Epipens contain epinephrine which is made from norepinephrine and it basically saves you when you have an allergic reaction.

Made me think of mytochlorians.

Pseudoephedrine, the most popular allergy relief drug, primarily target alpha-andrenergic receptors.

Adderall is adrenergic as well so yes. Anyone who takes clonidine for sleep just fyi it has the opposite action as sudafed so it can make your nose stuffy.

Holy hell, it always helps with my congestion but I always figured it was because I wasn't paying attention to it since I always focus really hard on other things when I'm on it. This thread is really interesting and I'm glad to know that wasn't just in my head and other people experience this too.

Interesting because Adderall increases histamine and actually stuffs up my nose

I’ve heard it increases histamine, but also have heard it can have a calming effect on some immune functions. I have MCAS and alopecia areata and personally the effects adderall have had on me have been: no more sneezing my head off in the morning when I wake up and no more bald spots on my head… but I do have an increase in random skin hives.

I have experienced absolutely zero allergy relief and decongestion from adderall. I have to take zyrtec everyday.

As others have commented, not necessarily anti-allergy but it could help with congestion. That's why Benzedrex inhalers for severe congestion contain poly propylhexedrine which is an amphetamine. I have pretty bad and omnipresent allergies to various things and haven't really noticed any reduction in allergy symptoms since being on medication. If anything it sometimes makes my allergy symptoms more annoying because of side effects like dry eyes.

I have mast cell activation syndrome and alopecia areata. I no longer sneeze for 30 minutes straight when I wake up thanks to adderall. My hair does not fall out leaving bald spots anymore. I do have an increase in itchy hives on my legs and arms at random times but that’s about it. Don’t have an upset tummy nearly as much.

Well that’s pretty awesome. Stops hair loss is not a symptom treatment I would have ever expected it to clear up at least for yourself

Yea I mean I’m not suggesting it’s appropriate for everyone of course, but for me it’s been working better than getting steroid shots in my scalp or taking antihistamines. Someone else explained to me that it could be due to nor/epinephrine’s effects on the vascular system and mast cells. I possibly have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (not quite confirmed just yet but it’s very likely considering my symptoms and comorbidities) so my tissues might be a bit leaky, including my blood vessels. Since adderall causes the release of both epinephrine and norepinephrine, it has some calming effects as well as some stimulating effects on my immune system I think. Like it can improve some areas, but irritate other areas lol. So while it’s probably causing more histamine intolerance and skin rashes, at least it’s keeping my hair from falling out and keeping me from sneezing my head off all the time lol.

Amphetamine is a very effective decongestant, and it can prevent some types of headaches. It helps me with colds and allergies like nothing else.

The past month or so I've had a cough. It's finally getting better and it's almost completely gone, so no worries. However around half way through this time period of having my cough, I started taking my adderall again. I'd take it around noon and by midnight it would start wearing off. In the morning before I took it I'd be coughing constantly, through the time i was on adderall, though, I'd be almost cough free. 12 hours strikes, cough comes back and probably worse then before because of the extra feelings of awfulness from the come down. But I had a few days where I didn't take the adderall again and the cough was awful all day. So adderall is certainly some sort of cough suppressant, or more likely, just removes the feeling of sickness because of the euphoric experience given by adderall.

I took adderall once when I had the flu and it basically made me feel almost healthy. It probably prolonged the illness though so I wouldn't recommend it.

I’ve been noticing this too! My allergies are always the worst this time of year, and I mean like I can’t even function due to my constant sneezing and eyes swollen shut typa beat. But this is my first year on adderall and I’ve barely noticed anything! If anything - my allergies have kinda manifesting as more of a scratchy throat that makes me have those ā€œchoking on ur own spitā€ typa cough attacks but other than that, almost nothing!
