It is bothersome, but from an artistic perspective that could've happened on rendering. Sometimes, when I draw on one layer, I make a copy every now and then of the layer as some sort of "safety net" I could get back to when I don't like the rendering I'm doing atm.
Sometimes that might only include certain parts of the drawings. Maybe the artist selected the face, because they didn't like the newer version, and pasted it on top and just forget to render/blend in the lines...
Guess we'll never know, I saw it mentioned before and I can't unsee it since then lol

considering visual novel type expressions are done by pasting the current expression on top of the sprite it could just be code missaligning the top expression and be completely unrelated to the artist too

Ah, that's true. I forgot about the VN aspect in this. That could very well be the reason

It’s probably not that since Arknights stores the full sprites with different expressions in its data and not just the expressions
(Which doesn’t seem very space-efficient to me, but…)
