I’ll go against the grain and say: I hate seeing this shit in the sky. Sure, right now you’re only likely to see one at a time but I fear for what it’ll look like in the future

Stage 1 is 4,000 satellites with a final goal of about 42,000. Each launch/train has about 50-60 satellites in it. But at 42,000 that’s 700-840 satellite trains orbiting earth! Ya fuck THAT. Plus that’s just one company doing it.

Also, for some reason they made these satellites with a highly reflective surface instead of a dark colour with low albedo. I’m sure that was a design choice and decision. Free marketing.

I agree, fuck this and fuck Elon.

"A passing dot" I saw train of at least 40 of them and this is just the start.

Is this what they look like all the time? Or is this what they look like while being deployed?

3
RuthlessRampage•

It just looks like that when they're initially deployed. You won't see that at their final orbit stage. OP is talking out of his ass

5
mxe363•

Wait I thought they switched coatings after like the first 3 launches??

3
RuthlessRampage•

Totally wrong, they only appear in this stage for their initial deployment, once they're in their final deployment stage of 550km you will not see them. They've also started applying anti-reflectice coating that should be on all operational starlink sats soon.

Not true. It depends on where the sun is in the sky(dusk and dawn being when you’re most likely to get reflection) but they WILL still be reflective. As will the other constellations future companies put into space.

#3,000 was in that bunch

22
hollywood_jazz•

3000 satellites? Wouldn’t that be every satellite Starlink has in orbit?

1
Jhoblesssavage•

Reddit auto formatted my bad #3000 was in that bunch

5
hollywood_jazz•

Oh ok, with this bunch they now have 3000 satellites in orbit total.

When I first read your comment I was really confused why they needed 3000 satellites in one cluster.

Jhoblesssavage•

When using a # you have to put a \ infront

Sometimes I have trouble separating the troll from the CEO but I'll never not enjoy seeing his products: the Starlink satellite array at night or SpaceX rockets landing.

He's just an emerald mine trust fund kid who pays a lot of smart people not-enough money to do this. You can be impressed by the engineers.

41
smoozer•

How much did elon musk get from that emerald mine lol?

5
chronoreverse•

It just serves as a great reminder never to idolize or demonize people. A person can both be terrible and amazing at the same time.

8
Odd_Fun_1769•

Your statement is true but I'm curious what you think Musk has done that's "amazing"? (Also your comment sounds like the wandmaker's comments about Voldemort in the first Harry Potter movie ... )

3†
blessedblackwings•

Billions in emerald mine money and engineers who's names he probably doesn't even know.

2†
smoozer•

No one on earth claims that elon musk got billions from an emerald mine. Well now you do, I guess.

4
bagada•

Billions in emerald mine money is pushing it, his dad's total net worth is a few million dollars lmao...

A lot of the billionaires out there are pretending not to be trolls. At least he makes it clear

-3†
blessedblackwings•

Is that supposed to be better?

3
Boring-Evening•

You serious? You'd rather some Koch bros style trolling compared to Elon?

-2†
blessedblackwings•

Those aren't the only options. Fucking eat all of them.

4
kid_jenius•

this is some dystopian stuff. I do not want more things like that revolving around so close like that.

10†
rediphileOP•

Well then whatever you do don't check out FlightRadar24. Those ones are even closer!

13
robodestructor444•

I don't know, I kinda like the concept of having fast internet in my house in the middle of nowhere

6
the_person•

Yes, but I hate the idea that someday there may be so many of them that we can no longer see the stars.

4†
mxe363•

Oh don’t worry. Light pollution will block out the stars long before starlink does.

1
the_person•

Not everywhere.

Have you ever driven a few hours out of the city, and looked at the sky? Do you remember how it made you feel?

You can't see that view in the city anymore, but it's still there.

If there are enough starlink satellites, there will be nowhere to escape to. The view, and that feeling, will be gone forever.

1
bagada•

You don't think impoverished people outside of first-world countries should have access to the internet?

1
Boring-Evening•

Bro, take a science class haha

re-post this on Dec.24 and tell kids it's proof of Santa

3
rediphileOP•

I think they should specifically target a launch for that date.

2

Given elons personality I would not be surprised this is already in the works

so dystopian

I will probably get downvoted for supporting starlink but I am very appreciative of what this company has been able to provide in terms of a service that connects rural, remote and indigenous communities with access to high speed internet.

Thought that’s the new Skytrain to Seattle…
