How to deal with Pudge?

Unless I am playing QoP, I always lose mid to any decent Pudge player, it got to the point where I stopped playing mid heroes, but I want to try again.

If I am playing a melee Hero ( NS, Beast Master, Brewmaster, Kunkka, Tiny ), I find really hard to effectively trade against Pudge in lane, and they eventually catch me in Rot range when I go for a last hit and follow up with a point blank Hook, at levels 6 it gets even worse to deal with him. When I don't die, I get outfarmed and lose control of my lane and runes.

With ranged Heroes its a bit easier, but I still have a lot of problems when I am playing Invoker, Storm Spirit, Lesh, Shadow Fiend, Tinker, Shadow Shaman, Death Prophet.

It only takes one Hook/Rot for me to die with any of the Heroes above, and lets be honest here, its not really that hard to land a Hook if you are smart about managing your mana with Bottle-runs/Runes. You eventually get one in, and that is enough to kill anyone early on ( minus Storm at 6, and maybe SS if you get the Hex fast ).

So.. yeah, any suggestions on how to reliably deal with Pudge on pugs where you don't always get wards, ganks and sometimes even a courier on your side besides picking Pudge before the enemy takes it? -.-
