The Holy Sun

Poem

Madness is the brightest light in the sky;

Lucidity is the solid stone on which I stand.

While the former begs me to try and fly,

I know that my booted feet belong on land.

But that doesn't mean I don't use the stars,

In all their brilliant glory dancing overhead,

To guide me to lands across oceans afar.

I just mean to say that I will sail instead.

And with both sides of me alive and well,

I depart for the most distant of horizons.

So for you who wants to travel, I must tell

That the best star to follow is the holy sun.

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.

Oh wow this is a real thinker! My reading comprehension isn’t amazing and I can’t fully decode what it’s about but either way the rhymes and words choices are great and it really does paint a picture even if I have no idea what it’s about (and that’s not a problem with the poem, like said I’m not very good at decoding stuff)! It reads like an old novel in a way I can’t fully describe other than just the words chosen. Absolutely delightful

No problem, as a schizoaffective and autistic person, I have trouble decoding some people's poems too, so I'd gladly interpret it for you. So, there's these two forces within me; madness and lucidity. Madness I associate with light in the sky, lucidity being the ground on which I stand. I say I'm tempted to lose myself in madness, but I've reached a point where I know I have to stay rooted in reality. That's when I effectively say the light in the sky still helps me when navigating the oceans, so in staying half in madness and half in lucidity, I gain the ability to travel farther than either of them by themselves. I then leave off on the note that the greatest light to let lead you is the holy sun, which I personally interpret to mean God. So, in essence, I'm saying you need to stay in the realm of rationality, but with faith in the divine, you can accomplish the most within your life as it will move you better than pure logic or pure madness possibly could by themselves. That's my intention at least. I hope that cleared up any confusion for you, and I'm very glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!

Oh my goodness that actually makes a lot of sense in hindsight! (Oh and I’m autistic too :3)
