books with an apocalyptic setting

I absolutely love the end of the world cliché! The walking dead, world war z, wranglestone, timberdark, all that's left in the world, Milo and marcus at the end of the world, etc etc. Does anyone have any recommendations? If there's any queer books within this genre that I haven't listed yet I would be ecstatic!

Loved the stand!

1

I actually really didn't like it that much. I read the extended edition and felt a bit like "is that it?".

Sometimes you just don't feel something ye know.

2

Ahah I actually can recall a similar reaction to the end of the story, as if the author got tired of writing and decided to end it there. But the journey is a sweet vivid memory in my mind!

2

I'm definitely not one of those people that thinks the last 10 seconds of a TV show or last page of a book should define the whole body of work but I did feel a little let down with the last 1/5 of the book.

I wouldn't say I'm Kings biggest fan but I felt much more satisfied with the likes of IT, The Shining and 11/22/63.

The first book of the Dark Tower series felt like a slog that I had to force myself to finish too.

The guy who started the “Zombie Apocalypse” genre, was Richard Mathieson. Read his book I Am Legend. No it’s not like the movie. In the book it’s a bacterial plague. In the book it’s Vampires, not zombies. In the book Robert Neville can talk with the vampires and the vampires can talk to Neville.

It was written way ahead of its time. It was written in 1954. A lot of the “Zombie Apocalypse” movies and books borrow from Richard Mathieson book.

It’s a short read. You could probably read it on a Saturday.

That adds a lot to it! I was actually scrolling past this book every single time thinking it would just be a repeat of what I've already seen, but it sounds so much better than the movie even! Thank you!

{Swan Song} is a great book that takes place right as a nuclear armageddon kicks off. It takes a brutal look at what could happen after such a devastating event but also has some supernatural elements to it.

Station Eleven

^(By: Emily St. John Mandel | 333 pages | Published: 2014 | Popular Shelves: fiction, science-fiction, sci-fi, dystopian, dystopia)

Set in the days of civilization's collapse, Station Eleven tells the story of a Hollywood star, his would-be savior, and a nomadic group of actors roaming the scattered outposts of the Great Lakes region, risking everything for art and humanity.

One snowy night a famous Hollywood actor slumps over and dies onstage during a production of King Lear. Hours later, the world as we know it begins to dissolve. Moving back and forth in time—from the actor's early days as a film star to fifteen years in the future, when a theater troupe known as the Traveling Symphony roams the wasteland of what remains—this suspenseful, elegiac, spellbinding novel charts the strange twists of fate that connect five people: the actor, the man who tried to save him, the actor's first wife, his oldest friend, and a young actress with the Traveling Symphony, caught in the crosshairs of a dangerous self-proclaimed prophet.

The Girl with All the Gifts (The Girl with All the Gifts, #1)

^(By: M.R. Carey | 461 pages | Published: 2014 | Popular Shelves: horror, fiction, science-fiction, sci-fi, zombies)

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr. Caldwell calls her "our little genius."

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant Parks keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.

Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn't know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

The Girl with All the Gifts is a sensational thriller, perfect for fans of Stephen King, Justin Cronin, and Neil Gaiman.

I’d suggest Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut (or really any of his other books). The story takes place after world war 3 when the machines have taken over almost all human jobs. This is his first novel, but it’s been a great read for me so far.

Seveneves

^(By: Neal Stephenson | 872 pages | Published: 2015 | Popular Shelves: science-fiction, sci-fi, fiction, scifi, owned)

What would happen if the world were ending?

A catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space.

But the complexities and unpredictability of human nature coupled with unforeseen challenges and dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain . . .

Five thousand years later, their progeny—seven distinct races now three billion strong—embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown . . . to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth.

A writer of dazzling genius and imaginative vision, Neal Stephenson combines science, philosophy, technology, psychology, and literature in a magnificent work of speculative fiction that offers a portrait of a future that is both extraordinary and eerily recognizable. As he did in Anathem, Cryptonomicon, the Baroque Cycle, and Reamde, Stephenson explores some of our biggest ideas and perplexing challenges in a breathtaking saga that is daring, engrossing, and altogether brilliant.
