Glass half empty or half full

Poem

I’m a glass half empty

under the half moon.

I never want to tumble

and spill over people

with my clumsy

incompetence

but the wind whips

and it whistles,

“No one is thee

and that is thy power.”

Now, I’m clumsy,

I’m far from full.

A faint but twinkling

star winks and says,

“Be the moon, inspire people

even if you’re far from full.

Glass half empty or half full,

that depends on which you choose.

Even if you’re far from full,

there’s still half competence ensured.

Choose to fill the other half

with some compassion for you.”

The half moon dazzles and

declares, “You are enough.

May you mellow with time

and be filled and brimful

like the ocean when I’m full.

Inspire and freshen people,

fulfil and actualise you.”

I would absolutely love some honest and constructive feedback. Please feel free to comment.

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.

This is honestly beautiful to me. The imagery created by your words is masterful, I don't know you and yet I feel I do; isn't that the goal of any poetry? Thankyou for sharing, I feel we may relate in some ways.

I’m a glass half empty

under the half moon.

This line really caught my attention.

Since you have proposed for a honest review, I would like to give it a go, though I'm no one's master.

  1. Refrain from using "thee" and "thy". It makes the web of your poetry breakable. I mean avoid clichè. It would flow smoothly if you just use "you" and "your".

  2. I was told that complexity of a poem should come from its lines not from synonymical words. If you like, you can also follow/keep this card with you. Your wish.

  3. I'm no one's master. So, don't take my words literally, hehehe. I'm just giving you a constructive feedback.

Keep it coming and 'May you mellow with time'.

I really like the optimism that is displayed in this poem. It's like the "faint but twinkling star" represents someone older, wiser, who has seen this before, and is telling the narrator that the future, one's perspective, is up to them and them only. That's a really refreshing way to think about things. For me personally, I've been focusing way too much on the negative in life, so this poem has actually made me pause and think about the role that I play in my situation/future.

I’m glad you like the imagery. I hope the poem can help you in some ways and you can navigate through whatever is going on in your life :)
