Love Me Like That White Horse From Hell
Bright gore
of another sunset.
Brambles have swallowed the fence
and flooded the field with a glitter
of blackberries, which seem to stare.
You pluck one with those acrylic talons,
push it past my lips,
and the earth shakes ---
the horse comes kicking turf,
huffing out steam
the colour of split nectarines.
Huge, and white. Each starless eye
sealed with glass --- too close, riderless,
holding the bit between its teeth
like a knife. Ropes of muscle
and veins.
It could cave our ribcages,
spurt our half eaten fruit
on the grass; I feel drunk on the idea.
But it turns and walks off,
dissolved in the sun --- a burnt matchstick
in that blinding void. Your face
is bleached white. Only an iris,
lips, a rose tinted ear. Pine trees
feathering sunlight through your hair.
Hypnotised, we write our names
in dark juice on the bark
as if we'd carved them there,
and leave them to dry,
or be pecked by birds,
or licked off
by the coming rains.
