On The Couch

Did Jonathan Brown just partially shift the blame onto Petty for what Zorko did? “You know there was sledging going both ways”. Also, “Let’s not talk about the captaincy”.

Yes, let’s absolutely talk about the captaincy, but not just even for this. Jesus Jono.

Yeah he absolutely put that on Petty. Can't really blame Browny for this view point, he has 2 brain cells and they are both competing for 3rd place.

😂

To be fair, I normally don’t mind Browny compared to most of the other player-turned-pundits, but he was far from the mark here. Possibly because it was his old club, but yeesh.

As a wa fan, he is usually biased towards Vic and Brisbane. Doubt he knows it.

21
Smithsonian45Brisbane Lions•

He definitely knows he's biased towards Brisbane, he does mention/admit it a bit. This was definitely a dumb thing to say though.

I think it's totally fine for him to have bias. I like it personally cause there have been multiple times where lions games have been otherwise totally ignored on footy analysis/talk shows - browny being the only one to actually bring them up. All of the talking heads have some innate bias, and I think there is some value to that as long as it's acknowledged. You can't be a footy fan and like all teams equally.

He did it after the game the other day. Said Petty would be embarrassed. Toxic masculinity embodied.

Would never admit that on TV though. He would talk about how we need to protect players well-being/mental health after putting his shoulder through people for 200 games. I don’t even necessarily mind the latter but I can’t stand the insincerity.

21
mynewaltaccount1Eagles•

I think it's more than fair for past players to say we need to protect players and their health, even someone like Brown.

Just cos he did that years ago - when there was no where near as much available information on what these hits were doing to players brains - doesn't mean he can't learn, especially given he has first experience in the issue.

The fuck else do you want him to say, players need to toughen up and cop brain damage? Can't blame him for how he played and then give him shit for saying that how he played needs to be stamped out.

People just looking everywhere for an angle to hate, regardless of what someone is saying.

35
MorningFresh123Collingwood•

That was a hypothetical. He’s just so clearly not himself on camera. He’s this fake, sanitised media product that bears little to no resemblance with who he was for the previous 20 years.

sButters88Melbourne•

That comes with change and personal growth though, you’re not designated a personality and stuck with that for the rest of your life.

If anything the way he plays gives him a bit of authority to say “You know what, I wasn’t brave crashing into other players like that, I was stupid.”

8
aussiepuck7654North Melbourne•

He really should have abstained from that conversation or at least admitted he's a brisbane lion fan before speaking. He may as well have worn his old lions guernsey when he made the comments cause they were biased as fuck.

So you’re embarrassed to be a supporter of the club but you won’t put blame on one of the biggest cancer’s in the club? Yeah that makes sense Jono

He's embarrassed because they lost, but not because Zorko is a piece of shit - That part he's fine with.

4
thegirldreamerGeelong•

His comments about the sledging were awful (pretty much classic victim blaming but I think he did say he agreed with talking about the captaincy issue for reasons other than the sledging (age etc).

Honestly, saying the Lions are a team full of nice guys was so ridiculous that I couldn’t take anything else seriously though.

27
scottyj67Freo•

Recall a few years back Zorko refusing to shake Millers hand after he got towelled up by Miller. Certainly not a leader of men.

22
ValidusOrcinusOPRichmond•

Yeah. Needing a team to have nastiness is just stupid. Toughness I get, but he picked players that, rightly or wrongly, have a reputation for being a bit dirty.

4
Yossarian_jamesDees•

Edit: Still fired up from the emotion of the game. The Brisbane boys are alright!

Me and my gf were saying the other night that Brisbane are probably the team with the highest number of bastards in the league. Hilarious comments from Browny there.

nickimus_rexBrisbane Bears•

Super weird comment. Other than Zorko, got a list? Keen to hear how they hurt you

5
Smithsonian45Brisbane Lions•

Yeah I'm definitely there with everyone agreeing that Zorko is a bastard.

If what I've heard is true and it was a) saying that he hopes Petty's mum dies, and b) Zorko knew that Petty's mum has cancer, I believe he should immediately be stood down as captain/shouldn't play any more games this season as a minimum (if Petty's mum doesn't have cancer and that's just another rumour then I think he should just stand down as captain after the year is up)

But after that who else is a bastard? Some people say Robbo, but look I've honestly never once seen Robbo play dirty. He plays hard, but it's fair play. No eye gouging, no headlocks, he's the first to back his boys up but he doesn't start shit that doesn't need to be started (sometimes he inadvertently starts shit by laying a big hit/tackle on someone, which is fair from the other team to come in. Don't consider that dirty though)

Can't think of a single other player on our team with a mean steak though lol

Edit: I forgot I once saw someone say charlie cameron is dirty, in the same game where charlie tackled someone roughly, play continued but charlie just ignored play to stop and make sure the player he tackled was alright/help him up. He's an absolute gem too

11
sButters88Melbourne•

Yeah I’d almost agree with Brownys comment that Brisbane are a team full of nice guys, with Zorko being the exception.

The amount of players who seemed disappointed with Zorko at the end of that game was encouraging to see

Jonathan Brown is so inauthentic. He tries way too hard to maintain this newfound insincere woke/progressive attitude on everything since joining mainstream morning radio. It just feels really forced and then he says things like this which are a window into his actual self.

17
tehnoodnubCollingwood•

Most current and ex footy players are best seen and not heard. Not surprising to hear this from Brown. What’s disappointing is that this is the culture and it gets continually passed down. I think the wheel is turning but pretty slowly.

Seem to have a memory of Jono flattening Sam Newman on The Footy Show for saying something about his mother. Is his issue that Petty’s emotional state wasn’t channelled into a violent outburst, like a real man? /s

Once you’re in the media, you have to completely separate yourself from the club/s you played for. His bias is showing big time here

He went on to say this isn't a character assassination or something along those lines. Bloody Oath it is, in no way should a leader of a football club be conducting himself in such a way.

I didn’t think he put blame on petty, I interpreted what he said as something must have happened before to make zorko say that. That statement that he said makes no sense just walking by someone and saying. Doesn’t excuse zorko either. As a lions fan im getting tired of seeing him make silly mistakes

DoDoDoTheFunkyGibbonRichmond•

So the dictionary is full of words. You can combine them into things called sentences. Some sentences are expressed to other people with commonly held meaning. We do this to express how we feel about something.

In the entire universe of ways to assemble all the words in a dictionary, old Dwayno there reached in to that bag of words (because I’m sure it’s full of ALL the words) and pulled out THAT sentence to say to another guy. His choice. Of alllllll the things to say, he said that.

But I’m sure he was provoked, and he couldn’t help it because he’s weak as fucking piss.

Fucksake man, some things you just don’t say. If you’re actually hard, if you’re a serious footballer, you don’t need fucking sledging.

Best guys I ever played against never said a thing. Not a fucking word.

Sledging is what you do when you run out of talent.
