[2700] I found a cat in the Norwegian woods
Hi everyone,
Here is a short story hailing from horror and Scandinavian folklore, that I'm considering posting on r/nosleep or r/shortscarystories after editing. For context: I'm a new author and English is my 2nd language, so feel free to unleash your inner Grammar Nazi in addition to your Destructive Reader!
Public Google Doc: I found a cat in the Norwegian woods
NB - The 1st version was posted 3 weeks ago under the title “What happened in the woods”. Thanks again to u/genuineroosterteeth, u/wrizen, u/baxipaxi, u/md_reddit, and u/1PrestigeWorldwide11 for their reviews. As promised, here is the follow-up if you're interested ;) Some of the edits include (hopefully): more character and setting development, more horror, more action, and no all-caps
A few questions:
- Other working titles are: "On Yule's Eve, I found a cat in the woods"; and "I followed a cat in the woods". Any preference? Or other suggestions?
- Is the story engaging and easy to read?
- Does the setting work, or is it too cliché? I've visited the region I'm describing, but am in no way a local nor an expert.
- Is the MC engaging? Would you be more interested in the story if you knew or liked her more; and do you feel like too many details come in the way of the actual story?
- Does the build-up work? Is the ending satisfying?
- The story plays on the lore surrounding >!the Yule Cat (more info : https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/each-christmas-icelands-yule-cat-takes-fashion-policing-extreme-180961420/). !<Had you ever heard of it before? If yes, did you guess the reference? If not, does the story still work for you? What did you think was going on?
My critiques: [2340] and [1010]
Thank you for your time and expertise!
