The Devil and I (Alcoholism)

Poem

God, it’s good to be home!

I kicked off my boots

As I turned on the lights

Another day in the field

I think I’m winning the fight

Or losing the fight

I guess time will tell

Time is abundant

But no time to dwell

I knew very well

I needed a drink

The bottle of vodka

Under the sink

Not once did I think

“Maybe I’ll chase it.”

I took a sip with the devil

And we got aquatinted

/

He poured me a drink

Asked me of work

I told him “It’s hell.”

He gave me a smirk

My back always hurts

My mind is a mess

To much to resent

To much to regret

He thought it’d be best

I call up my boss

And tell him his wife

Is built like a dog

So I gave him a call

And we had a talk

Long story short

I don’t have a job

/

He poured me another

Then asked of my lover

I told him “Shes gone.”

He told me “Well fuck her.”

I told him he’s right

Let’s call up her mother

And say we’re the police

We arrested her brother

He dialled the number

While nodding his head

I laughed like a villain

My heart made of lead

I woke up the dead

I gave her a scare

I left her whole family

In shock and despair

/

I said “Enough about me,

What’s new with you?”

He looked at me strange

He was confused

“I thought that you knew

We are the same

I’m just the poison

You feed to your brain.”

It started to rain

It started to pour

He faded away

I fell to the floor

I slept for a day

Then woke up restored

I’ll say it again

As I’ve said it before

I really shouldn’t drink anymore…
