Can Night Stalker be viable late-game?

I have gotten into Night Stalker recently. I have over 300 wins and have been playing Dota2 for over 600 hours, but in my first few NS games I felt like a complete noob and got raged at pretty hard. I have since gotten better, but I find myself completely useless late game, even when I have a great early game.

I have tried a few different item builds, but usually end up getting a bunch of cheaper items (i.e. BKB, Skull Basher, Armlet, Helm of the Dominator) as opposed to one or two really expensive items (i.e. Heart).

I'm hoping that a more experienced NS player can help me improve my late game. Any suggestions?
