BMA Locum Pay Cap Removal Campaign #scrapTheCap

Pay & Conditions

Good to see the BMA putting pressure on the London trusts to remove the asinine London locum pay cap, they even have a form to nag your trust CEO.

For those who are interested the cap is at present:

GradeCoreAnti-Social
SHO£36.14£43.37
SpR£45.18£54.21

DoI: recently rejoined BMA Member, burnt out/locum-bum F4 with vested interest in killing the cap, hence posting here 😆

What's there not to understand. 2 tier system. When corporations/trusts control pay it is OK - good for business, good for tax payers money. When the workers want to get organised about pay it is market manipulation and F*** you!

Simples!

Has there ever been a legal challange to this?

It's literally a cartel.

What utterly horrendous rates. Whichever intellectual pygmy of a clinician allowed these through should be ashamed.

Unidan_bonaparte•

Carear doctors, you know the ones - staying behind till 8pm as a 3rd year med student to curry favour with consultants and hiding library books in the run up to exams.

These rates are too high, the actual cap is £32 for an SHO social, and £40 for a reg. The figures you posted are inclusive of WTD which shouldn’t be advertised in the hourly rate.

You're completely right, I stand corrected looking at my payslips - how depressing. I can't find a solid source beyond the messly one though

11

Wow, those rates are horrendous.

As a locum SHO in ED it was £54 for OOH (including any shift 4pm +) and any in hours ie. finished at 5pm was £46. Enhanced was £65.

Picked up a locum shift this weekend (12pm-9pm) as a MG/SSHO at enhanced rate £85ph.

Why isn’t the locum pay cap illegal cartel behaviour? It’s the worst elements of Pablo Escobar and the Soviet Union rolled into one. Trusts just outside London are paying around double that.

Routinely paid £60-65/hr for night shift as ED SHO in SE London in 2009

shabob2121•

Can still get that tbf I get 61.50 outside of 7-7 Mon-fri. This is ED mind medics get much worse afaik

5
mat_caves•

Yes true - but when I was a student in 2009 you could get a pint for 99p at the student union bar…

Oh god 😭😭😭

Jesus that’s awful. My hospital in Yorkshire has capped rates and they’re higher than those. What a joke.

Community pharmacists are actually asking for whatever they want these days, they earn between 55-70 pounds, I wish we could do the same

7
BigBeatManifesto99•

Lurking pharmacist here, can confirm. In Scotland, they are pretty much always advertised as 50ph, can often get them to pay me 55ph and once or twice have managed to get 60ph.

Free market capitalism, workers rights etc don't apply for the NHS who haa a monopoly, gets to do anything it wants and us supported by the public as it benefits them.

I work in NW London and actually only big hospitals are enforcing the caps bcs doctors enjoy to some degree working there as they are better supported, are learning and have better facilities. Go beyond zone 2, and most won't enforce them bcs ppl are not willing to sacrifice their time commuting to shithole to work in shitty conditions at unsociable hours for nothing. However, there are hospitals who don't care about care or body count as they feel they have done enough just by advertising some gaps at shitty rates.

Must be bad if it's hospital wide and there are good small departments that really suffer with short staffing and the consultants want to pay more but the hospital management say no.

2
DauMue•

It is bad. We have let too many non-doctors making important decisions which affect patient care. These hospital management people spend all their time in offices with little insights into what problems they are creating.

currently the form works in NW london where the campaign is beginning as we have the most reps there. if you work elsewhere and want to get involved fill this out! : https://forms.office.com/r/mz6HcpfZuz

So the NHS thinks that 50/hour for a night time (after 9pm??!) Specialist Registrar doctor's skills and services is appropriate and acceptable? And how much is a plumber overnight?

The biggest fault of course lies with the doctors themselves who went along with these insulting price caps since 2016 or whenever they were introduced. If you accept peanuts they will treat you like clowns.

4
UkDocForChange•

Our own fault for taking the shifts. Don’t take them and let it burn for a week and rates will go up.

OP i work at a non london trust that has put locum pay caps in place across regional trusts.

Can we get some action to pressure these trusts too?

3
tangowookieeCT/ST1+ Doctor•

London is a trial as it was North Thames that started the groundwork and proposed the policy. The aim is for this to be replicated across the UK.

DOI: I proposed the original motion for which this work now stems from. They're doing great work!

1
CataractSnatcherST3+/SpR•

Yet again why does anyone work for this?

It’s a joke.

3
uk_pragmatic_leftieCT/ST1+ Doctor•

That's such a shit reg pay for being the most senior person about in that specialty. Core 7-7 so locum long day is really shit.

But it’s a vocation! We should work for bread and a tin of beans! tHiNk oF tHe PaTiEnTs 🤪

1
doctorydoctor•

My trust paid my already capped locum as f1 rate. When i argued against this as im f2 they said we need approval to pay you as f2. But i am f2? Why am i proving this to my trust who have employed me as f2??

1
DauMue•

gif

They might ask you to prove you are a doctor, and until then pay you on a porter's rate.

1

Mate porters earn more when locuming

1
DauMue•

Really?

1

Don’t know but it’s a sad state of affairs that statement makes people think twice

2
kingmidas2020•

This is not the right time for this campaign. Full pay restoration first. If we lose the FPR fight the BMA will lose all credibility & you can kiss goodbye to any more union wins for a generation.

BMA has lost all credibility a long time ago.
