Was there ever any talk or plan for Middle Earth after the events of the Fellowship?

Question

Was Middle Earth ever destined to be 'our Earth'? Just an alternate history?

I've always wondered if there were plans to keep the story going but google hasn't offered me much. Now watching the new series my enjoyment in the world of LOTR is back.

Thank you all! :)

Early on Tolkien had set out to create a mythology for Britain, which would make Middle-earth very much our world. But... he pretty much abandoned the concept.

He also started writing a sequel to The Lord of the Rings, called The New Shadow, but abandoned that as well because he felt the big bad evil guy just being some dickish human was horribly depressing.

I wonder, were elves and dwarves apart of that?

I hope that Amazon can bring this to light one day. With justice of course.

No. What little he did write (a dozen or so pages) is set in Gondor in the Age of Men.

Not really. The dwarves of Durin's folk eventually retake Moria, but dissapear into its depths, going extinct. The elves who remain eventually fade from the sight of men. And I believe that Tolkien wrote in a letter that Hobbits regress as a society and are hunted out of existence by men. He may have scrapped that last idea though.

Yeeeesh... That's pretty bleak.

So it must be true the lack of Dwarven women...

It kinda is. Tolkien had a running theme of decline in his work.
