Two weeks into this training block with the goal of running a sub 17 5k by mid-late December. Herrreee we go!

*I also coach high school cross country so some of my runs are constrained by the fact that I'm running with/pacing the team

Monday: 4.25 miles with hills (8:20/mi).

Tuesday: 4.75 miles + hills (8:12/mi).

Wednesday: Rest

Thursday: 6 miles (6:58/mi).

Friday: Fartlek 7 (6:15/mi) 4 off (recovery jog) x4 plus a 1 mile cool down to make 7 miles all together

Saturday: 3 mile shakeout

Sunday: 3 mile trail run

Feeling good this week. Increasing mileage nice and slowww. First race of the training block is slated for October 2nd in Baltimore.

I’m on week 9 of the advanced Hanson marathon plan. I had to skip my marathon pace run (10mi total, 8 at MP which is 9:09 for me) and an easy run (7mi) this week because of childcare, jury duty, and work. I’m super bummed. Feeling like I’m losing motivation. As the miles pile on, it’s getting sooo hard to wake up in the morning and get my run in. I used to be able to wake up at 6:15, do a 6 mile easy run at 6:30 and be showered, breakfasted and caffeinated in time to start work at 8. Now my runs are hard enough that I need to eat first (adds like 30 min to the schedule because I need time to digest and poop too) and they just plain take longer because they are longer. It’s really hard to wake up at 5:30 as I’m a natural night owl. And the cumulative fatigue of the Hanson plan is no joke so getting out of bed in the mornings have been HARD. I don’t know how I’m going to keep the discipline up. The only plus side is that the weather is starting to cool off over here.

Just getting back into running, have been training for a bike race all summer and started to implement running as cross training and I quickly fell in love with the simplicity of it all! (vs. cycling). I used to run track in HS, 400m. But I'm new to the endurance running scene.

I'd like to be able to run 10k+ just casually but my legs aren't ready yet. I can run 5k but that's about my limit now. Want to build up some base fitness first though so I don't go injuring myself.

Easy pace is 10:00 - 12:00 min/mile.

Mon: Rest

Tues: 2mi Easy

Wed: 2mi Easy

Thur: 2mi Easy

Fri: 4mi Run/Walk Intervals (10:00/2:00)

Sat: 3mi Hike (Active Recovery)

Sun: Rest.

Legs were definitely feeling it by the end of Friday's run, I think I need to add another rest day in the middle, and run on Mondays (I was busy this week).

is 10 MPW too much to start with?

I started running in January with the goal to run a 10k in May. I didn't follow any specific plan. I also didn't run for mileage I ran to increase time I could run. I never actually got to 10k during training, but I was able to push myself on the day of the event and managed to run the entire 10k. For me I did it in 1 hr, 14 seconds. I had never run for that long...EVER!

So I would encourage trying to run for longer periods of time rather than worrying about distance, but getting more miles per week will help your endurance.

i’m trying out the nike run club half marathon plan for the Berkeley half in november. presently on week 11 which means today is my 10k long run. i’ve done hal higdon for a few half marathons i’ve run in the past and am enjoying the way the nrc plan mixes the types of runs up and isn’t just pure mileage, but it is also my first time depending on speed work for training so we’ll see how that goes.

I just started the Nike run club half marathon plan this week. I’m liking it so far!

Context: I'm preparing for a half-marathon in a few weeks, and a bit behind training because I couldn't find time in the evenings to run. I've been getting in the habit of waking up at 6am to go running now, and that's really helped. I'm not really following a formal plan, but trying to mix up short/fast runs with slow/long runs.

Sunday: ran 6 miles, slowly (bit out of shape)

Monday: ran 6 miles, and ran ~ 1 min/mi faster than my time the previous day

Wednesday: Did a 5K "fast run."

Thursday: spent 20 mi doing HIIT - sprinting mixed with walking

Friday: Ran ~ 6 mi with a friend at a half-marathon pace. It was supposed to be 10 mi, but had to be cut short for unrelated reasons.

Week went better this go around although I had to switch things a round a bit and still too many miles on the treadmill. Weather has been great for early morning runs, but haven’t been able to get my schedule right to get outside much.

Workout went well (although had to do it on the treadmill). Goal T pace was ~6:23 with splits of 6:26, 6:20; 6:20, 6:23; 6:25. Still would much rather be doing these outside. My kids have been begging me to go play Ultimate Frisbee with them and there friends so I finally did on Thursday….for 2 hours. Which was a bit of mistake. Chasing kids 1/3 my age around was fun, but oh lord, I found muscles I have not been using in running. So sore!

Soreness and some scheduling issues made me push the long run to Sunday as well as drop the quality miles from it. But got the 20 miles in which has been a struggle this cycle. My long runs have suffered. I’ve gotten most of the 16-18 milers with quality in, but the longer E runs have been tough to get done for some reason.

49k this past week, plus a little bit more than 5 hours of cross training (leg isolation exercises and bike).

A good week given the circumstances, I had expected only 30-40k for the first week out of the hospital. Monday's run was extremely sluggish. I slow jogged the first 4k in 7:15/k with a heart rate around 100, but nevertheless had zero power on the harmless incline that begins at kilometer 4.3. I thus called it quits after 5k and walked to the nearest bus stop. But things improved very quickly from there.

Next week: I am still not allowed any heavy upper body lifting. Thus, I will ramp up the mileage this week. I expect to run 55-70k this week, with zero or one quality sessions, plus 5-7 hours of cross training.

Mon 8.1mi (1:36)

Tue 10.5mi (1:49)

Wed 9.4mi (1:40)

Thu 7.3mi (1:15)

Fri 8mi (1:34)

Sat 5k race in 20:59, +up/down 2.8 miles

Sun 11mi (2:04)

Total: 60.1 miles (+7 miles on stationary bike)

The 5k race was partially on trails, and it was very warm, so I have my excuses for slowing down by over a minute compared to June. I did get 1st AG, however, out of like 9 in my age group. This was 2nd 5k for my DW, she improved by 2min to 31min and 4th AG. I did feel a lot more comfortable running 6:40 miles compared to the 6:20's I was attempting in June.
