Li'l Race Report Thread

Weekly Thread

The Li’l Race Report Thread is for writing a short report on a recent race or a run in a new place. If your race doesn’t really need its own thread but you still want to talk about it, then post it here! Both your good and bad races are welcome.

Didn't run a race, but had an interesting run to talk about. Post it here as well!

So get to it, Runnit! In a paragraph or two, where’d you run and how’d it go?

Ran Around The Crown in Charlotte. Fun 10k that is a 1 mile through the a popular neighbor with a poorly timed water stop at mile 0.75 and nothing until mile 4. Mile 1-4 took place on the beltway around that loops around the downtown area.

It was my first race, and first 10k since my stress fracture during a half marathon so this was particularly bad. 12 minutes slower than last year. I'm now realizing that a half in 3 weeks is a bit ambitious 5 months post fracture, but with a flatter course and perhaps cooler weather in Chicago finishing should be just a slight struggle.

Ashfield - Anneville Half Marathon (Meath/Ireland)

Time 1:50:40

Avg Pace: 5:15/km

Elevation: 102m

A local half marathon on the calendar for the Dublin City marathon prep. The course is not flat, some hill climbs that suck energy. 4 laps with a water station at the start/finish line.

I've only trained up to 25k this year and had never done a HM race up to this point. My most recent HM PB was 2hrs 4mins and we usually had a training pace between 5:30-6:00 so my intention was start slow around 5:30/km and see how I get on.

I ran a mountain race last week, 15k with 1400m elevation so even though everyone else was saying we were on a hilly course I honestly didn't compare it to my previous race and just chugged along. We had actually gone out around 5;20/km for the first lap which was slightly longer than the 3 remaining ones to give us the full HM distance, and due to the hilly nature of the course my pace was fluctuating so on the way up the hills and into the breeze I was seeing 5;40/km sometimes, on the drop or into the flat sections I was hitting around 5:10-5;05/km when I looked at my watch.

On the last 2km the group I was in had started to slow and I broke away, dropping to 4;45/km for the final section up to the line. On Strava my pace in the middle of the race is like a perfect line at 5:15, I'm super impressed at how consistent I kept it. I believe that based on my result and how I felt after the race that I can probably shave a few more minutes off my overall time if running on a flatter course. My next target now would be a 1:45:00 HM
