Its that time of year again, UNM dorm guide
Many of you will be new to UNM this fall, others may be new to the dorm situation. I've assembled a couple of images to assist with moving in and deciding where to live. I'm trying to get all the information that UNM doesn't give you or that is so clumsily put together on their website that it might as well just not give you. Hopefully this will help you put together a picture of where you will be staying and compare/contrast which dorms are the best choice. I don't mean to be presumptuous, but I really hope that this thread can be added to the sidebar to allow for assistance throughout the years. Please add to this as you see fit.
To begin with, I got a map and put the hall names over them so you can see where you will be living. Notice that Hokona is the closest to classes and Redondo is across Johnson field. Santa Clara and Laguna/Devarges are closest to LaPo (La Posada: the "cafeteria"). On the subject of La Posada, it gets a lot of hate here. This is because it is not the best food you could find. The food is slightly limited and some stuff is weird to say the least, but it is sustenance. It has a salad bar, hamburgers, pizza, and sandwiches almost constantly and has rice, chicken, vegetable assortments, etc. nearly as often.
All the dorms have a kitchen (on the floor for traditional dorms, in the building for suites, and in the apartment for apartments). All traditional dorms have communal bathrooms (whole floor), all suites have suite bathrooms (your suite), and all apartments have a bathroom (just you and you're roommates). The price goes dorm < suite < apartment. Double < single < deluxe single. Smoking is not allowed in the dorms but is allowed in designated smoking areas. All halls have free laundry (except lobo village and casa del rio).
The dorms:
-
Hokona - Traditional dorm. Recently remodeled and closest to classes. The dorms I've seen have individual heating units in each room so that you can control the temperature. Men and women on same floor but not same room. Single or double room.
-
Santa Clara - traditional dorm. Has a minifridge and a microwave in every room, and short walk to classes and LaPo. Men and women on same floor but not same room. Double or "deluxe single" (its more expensive but slightly larger of a room).
-
Alvarado - traditional dorm. Has a minifridge and a microwave in every room, but a longer walk to classes and LaPo. Men and women on different floors. Double or deluxe single.
-
Coronado - traditional dorm. Longer walk to classes and LaPo. Men and women on different floors, and one of the floors is the basement which I believe the men get. The rooms have their own sinks. Double or single.
-
Laguna and DeVarges - suite. Close to classes and LaPo. Men and women don't share suites. These have basement kitchens and rec rooms. Double or single.
-
Student Residence Center - apartment. Close to classes and LaPo. These are apartments that connect directly to the outside, so your RA can't smell anything going into the hall (take the hint tree lovers). Men and women don't share apartments. Singles only.
-
Redondo - apartment. Farthest away from classes and LaPo, but also the nicest apartments IMO. Men and women don't share apartments. singles only.
-
Casas Del Rio - this does not go through UNM, but is an option to consider. It is on campus. I don't know too much about it so I am linking their website.
-
Lobo Village - this does not go through UNM, but is an option to consider. It is off campus but there is a bus that can take you to and from campus. Because it is off campus, it has been the center for many parties and a lot of alcohol related issues. I don't know too much about it so I am linking their website.
Hope this helps!
