Tuesday Shoesday

Weekly Thread

Shoes are a big topic in this sub, so in an effort to condense and collect some of these posts, we're introducing Shoesday Tuesday! Similar to Wednesday's gear thread, but focusing on shoes.

What’ve you been wearing on your feet? Anything fun added to the rotation? Got a review of a new release? Questions about a pair that’s caught your eye? Here's the place to discuss.

NOTE: For you Runnitors looking to sell/trade any running gear (as well as bib transfers), head over to r/therunningrack.

I hate shopping for shoes, it's so confusing!

I've been wearing Altra Lone Peaks since 2015 through every iteration. This year I shook things up with some Altra Superiors and it's been going well enough so far. I don't think I'll ever try another brand again honestly unless they go off the deep end. I use these things until they're more hole than shoe.

Decathlon just released a carbon-plated supershoe - apparently working with the same people Nike used for the ZoomX foam in the Vaporfly. It's supposedly more stable, a lot more durable, and at €150 sounds a great deal. Kinda keen on trying it despite the fact that I'm hardly in a position to make great use out of it given how decidedly not fast I am.

6
handlemundler•

It’s a 150€ shoe, you can find a last season colorway vaporfly for that price even in the EU

5
estanmilko•

The reviews so far say it's a harder ride than ZoomX foam with Decathlon claiming it softens up. I'd wait for the longer term reviews to see if that's true.

4

Decathlon, one of the few companies that literally doesn't even pretend to give a shit about profiteering from the war in Ukraine.

But hey we can get cheap, non-proven carbon shoes.

2
sga1•

Haven't heard about that angle yet - got anything I could read up on?

1

When a ton of Western companies announced they were pulling out of Russia early in the war, Decathlon announced they were increasing shipments to Russia because they forecasted increased demand. Should be easy to Google.

They're owned by some super rich family that doesn't give a fuck.

Sad because some researchers in running have said their shoe lab is legit. Hutchinson from Outside wrote about it at some point.

3
Oscarman5000•

Are there any reviews out on it yet? If you want something more tried and true I've seen the Endo Pro 2's for < €130 now on sale.

Maybe it will be better though, let us know if you try them out!

Saw one by The Running Channel on YouTube that sounded decent enough. Worry with the Saucony ones for me is going to be fit, really - they seem a bit narrow in the forefoot for my liking.

pacific_crick•

It looks like I need to return the Fresh Foam 1080v11 that I just bought. I adored the v10 and have almost 500 miles on them. My heels just won’t stay in the v11s. Can anyone comment if the v12 upper fits a bit more snugly?

4
wafflemiy•

heels just won’t stay in the v11s

i feel just as sad about folks who have heel problems with the v11s as i do for people who think cilantro tastes like soap

it really is such a good feeling shoe- I wish it worked well for everyone. thinking about grabbing a pair or two now that they they're being discounted for the 12s.

3
pacific_crick•

Yeah that is what I did. Fleet feet has them on sale right now. I had read the v11s were a little loose in the heel but the v10s fit me so well that I risked it. I had the v10s and if I were to have another kid their middle name would have been 1080v10. Those shoes were perfect for me.

3
emth0r•

Have you tried tying your shoes with the runners loop? I use this to help secure my heel.

2
pacific_crick•

I’ve used it on some other brands. I will try it on the 1080v11 but it is so sloppy that I doubt it will make the difference.

I used to wear Nike Pegasus but unfortunately my physical therapist informed me I needed more support than Nike was giving me, so now I'm shelling out triple for Brooks Dyad 11s. Yes I'm super bitter about it because I love Nike Pegasus (and because I used to be able to shop at the employee store and get them cheap).

That being said, Brooks has given me the support I needed, and they accommodate my braces pretty well. I feel safer running now, less like I'm one misplaced pebble away from a sprain again. I feel like I definitely got what I paid for.

Hey gang! I’m trying to incorporate running back into my life and currently rocking some old adidas ultra boosts. I’ve been doing about 15km a week to start. I run on roads and a gravel trail nearby. Can I just run these into the ground or should I get some dedicated running shoes?

3
ElectricDolls•

I've never personally tried Ultraboosts but almost everyone will tell you they're a bad choice for running. You should probably get some "proper" shoes.

2
junkmiles•

Generally seen as more of a lifestyle-athletic shoe than a straight up running shoe, but if it's working for you, keep on keepin on. Some folks put a lot of miles in them.

If the gravel road gets wet and muddy you might run into problems with road shoes, but otherwise you should be good to go.

yallneedcheezits•

A while ago I threw my Clifton 8s out of rotation because they just weren't vibing with me. I've recently put them back into rotation because they are just so dang soft. They still aren't my favs - I bought a pair of New Balance SuperComp Trainer in hopes of a similar soft shoe with a drop that works better with my stride.

3
shaun5565•

I just bought saucony kinveras loving them so far. Nice and light but not sure what I should get for a second pair of she’s

Look up shoe rotations.

Just introduced the Mizuno Wave Horizon 6 into my line up for long runs. I usually go with the Mizuno Wave Inspire series for every run but I thought I'd change things up.

I've taken them out for two short runs and a medium run - they felt odd the first two runs, then felt fantastic on the third, medium distance, run. Can't figure out if there was a break in period or it took that long for me to lace them correctly - the whole shoe fits quite snug and the laces are very grippy, so maybe I done them up too tight the first few times? Anyway, they feel good now!

2
Wismg71•

I just bought Mizuno wave riders. Had my feet scanned and was given inserts ( I have high arched). I’ve ran four times with them, they feel great!

2
sga1•

I really like them, and find them very comfortable - can totally see why you're enjoying them as well!

3

Altra Torin 6. Returned my Gel-Kayanos to get the Torins and haven't looked back since. I have incredibly flat feet but over compensating with mobility shoes + insoles only increased my injuries (post tib issues). The Torins are super comfy and just enough support for my flat feet. I also love the wide toe box as the Kayanos were super narrow. I just ran 17 miles in them with no lingering discomfort.

2
sarah_super_nova39•

Does the tongue bother you? That tongue is so awful imo. I wear the Torin luxe because the torin 5 and 6 have an awful tongue.

2
emth0r•

I've heard terrible things about the tongue but haven't experienced that issue myself. I wear Feetures socks that come up past the tongue which probably helps.

1
satxmcw•

I have multiple pairs of the 5 -- The tongue is definitely but awful, but I just use scissors to cut the tongue shorter and then it's all good

1
ThanksILoveItHere•

I’m so glad you like them, it’s just odd - total opposite for me 😂. I have low arches, not totally flat but the Torins hurt my arch even just walking in them. Whenever they come up I’m so salty because I want that wide toe box but they’re just a bad fit for my foot.

1
emth0r•

Thanks. Sorry to hear you didn't have a great experience. The wide toe box is definitely a game changer.

Labor Day Sales! Have a ton of new shoes coming in! Feel like a bit of a tool basically only wearing Adidas shoes, but they work.

Adios 7 on the way to start working in. Couldn't find another pair of Adios 6 in stock in my size. Love the 6, assume the 7 will be the same, just somehow nearly an ounce lighter. Most of my running has been in the Adios 6 or Boston 10 since they came out.

Takumi Sen 8 for some of my workouts and maybe some racing. I still love my Run Fast Pros, but I think those probably top out at 10k for me, and the Takumi, I'm guessing, should be good up to 10mi or a half.

Supernova+ for extra Boost squish on some easy days or long runs when the Adios and Boston aren't feeling right.

Terrex Speed Ultra, because I mostly run trails in my old Bostons, and these look like my old Bostons but knobbier. Have some big trail adventures planned this fall, and my old trail shoes are in rough shape.

Also got a new pair of Stan Smiths and some Gel Lyte IIIs for wandering around.

current rotation: NB 880v12, Saucony Triumph 19, craft PRO Endur Distance , reebok floatride run fast 1

2
runfayfun•

I feel I'll probably end up needing another daily trainer for my current marathon training program.

Wanting something more lightweight than the Triumph 19 but I love the responsiveness of the foam despite its softness underfoot.

Triumph 20 are an ounce lighter it seems, and sounds like it's a contender. But I want to see if anyone has specific recommendations. I was looking at the GlideRide 3, Velcity Nitro 2, Mach 5, 1080v12, Invincible Run FK2, etc.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

2
MSKOnlyScans•

Glideride 3 for sure. Getting fantastic reviews for long distance runs.

1
runfayfun•

I've heard they're awesome, but I'm actually a bit worried to use them as a daily trainer because I use the Endo Speed 2 and Endo Pro 2 for my twice-weekly quality workouts, and for easy runs, I feel like using something with a plate (even a mild hardened EVA "plate") might be detrimental. Any thoughts on that aspect?

1
MSKOnlyScans•

Does it have a plate? I thought just a rocker.

1
runfayfun•

It's being called a plate in all the reviews

Looking for daily training shoes, I will focus for 2/3 months on speed for 5/10k but on November I'll start training for my second marathon and ideally for a couple of months I will keep the same shoes. My last 3 shoes were Clifton 8 but now I'm looking for something that can help my speed a little bit more but still support mid-long runs (until 20-25k) Any advice?

2
junkmiles•

Rincon or Mach would fall into that category if you want to stick with Hoka.

4
DennissSystem•

Just went from clifton to Novablast 2 as my daily trainer, really liking it so far(not many kms yet though) Feel they have a little more "kick" than clifton for speedwork, but that might be that my cliftons were getting old.

3
hapa79•

Fave neutral women's trail runner from Topo? Looking for recommendations (and why you love the one you do)!

2
daithijlacha•

The Kinvara 12 was my first real pair of running shoes. I'd been doing mostly 5K/10K races in them, but will be training for my first marathon next year. I'm looking for a replacement that will be easier on the feet but still fast/light. I'm looking at the Mach 4 and Endorphin Speed 2 as possibilities. Any suggestions?

2
tigerbellyfan420•

Looking at these responses, I think it makes sense from a financial perspective to go for the speeds. Can't beat 50 percent off...but I think a true successor to the kinvaras are the freedom 4 or 5s from saucony. Kinvara and freedom both share a 4mm drop and it has the same pb foam midsole found in the speeds without a plate. Your feet might not agree to go from no plate to a plated shoe for everyday shoe. The freedom 4 (cheaper) or 5 is definitely cushioned and responsive enough for both long runs and speed efforts

3
Jesse_berger•

Yeah, that's the problem with the Kinvara.. I have MANY pairs of the 12s and they're great for short runs but I personally draw the line at 10k with them.

Go with the Speed 2, I hear the 3s are a bit more stable but the Speeds are light weight, fast and capable of longer distances. Using code BGR50 can get you 50 percent off on Saucony which is arguably the best shoe you can get for under $100. Or perhaps FMTIB50 for 51%

2
daithijlacha•

Woah, thanks so much for those codes! I was leaning towards the Speed anyway so this settles it.

2
Jesse_berger•

Just do yourself a solid and stay away from r/RunningShoeGeeks and unsubscribe from all of Saucony emails.

They have the best sales and it's far too easy to fall down the trap of collecting all the colors.

1
BottleCoffee•

Speed 2 are way less stable than Kinvara, FYI. I strongly prefer the Kinvara still but I've been doing speed with in the Speeds because I own them now.

Personally I do my long runs in the Kinvaras still training for my half.

I switched from my first every pair (New Balance 520s with about 300 miles on them, cheaply bought at their outlet store) to Brooks Ghost 14s. They both fit well, and the biggest noticeable change is that the Ghosts don't have as good ventilation in the top. Other than that they are fine, but I am also curious to know how other more up-tempo shoes might feel (money is an issue so buying numerous pairs of shoes isn't a responsible choice at the moment, but I have been eyeing the Saucony Endorphin Speed 2s, just as an example). I'm a new runner so it's all a learning curve.

2

Fat guy looking to get back into running. (Daughter is running a 5k and I want to plod along).

Wide feet - always wore New Balance previously.

Any recs?

2

New Balance offers a wide variety of wide shoes - 1080, 880, 860, etc. Try one of those. Brooks also offers wide sizes. Saucony and Asics do as well, but their lineup this year is ridiculously short and narrow.

2
Icy-Mud7327•

Thanks - I'll give them a look.

1
FRO5TB1T3•

880's are a good workhorse shoe i've enjoyed.

1
Icy-Mud7327•

Thanks - I've been out of the shoe game for a while. I may have to find a running store locally. I have made some bad purchases before, and had to go back to my "lawn" shoes.

1
jdj7w9•

I recently bought new running shoes and the person at the store was adamant that I sized up. So I went with a half a size bigger than my old shoes despite her recommending atleast a full size larger. Since the new shoes I've been having some pain in my toe that I think is turf toe. I think this may be because of the shoes but was wondering if anyone had similar issues?
