Empty Spaces
Like the empty lines of poems I didn’t write;
Like the cold side of the pillow next to mine;
Like the spiders web dripped with morning dew;
Like the Tennessee sunrise gone too soon;
Like the tree grown aside the river, the tide enough to make its roots quiver;
Like a meadow of peonies, daffodil, and amaryllis, now a place to gather parking tickets;
Like an adolescent dream, now on the clock from seven to three;
Like the touch of past lovers lost to live without one another;
Like the blood spilled between brothers, because we didn’t look or think like each other;
Like the baby still born; Her father still torn;
Like the god that failed and the ones he led into hell;
Like the cynic silently wishing the world to change,
And the skeptic who wants the same thing…
I see no empty space. Just a waste of it.
