mixing a noir murder mystery with epic fantasy

i'm crafting a world that is a homage to the classic fantasy world: You have elves, humans, magic, a medieval setting, all that stuff. But, within this epic narrative, i wanted to wolve a noir mystery to spice things up, but i don't know if this mixture will work. I'm not talking about just having a detective story in a medieval fantasy setting, that can and have been done, but what i wanna do is have the noir narrative with a backdrop of epic fantasy, with huge battles and a continent spanning saga. Can this work, or are the two intrinsically opposed?
