Need help with dog who has become pushy
Hi all!
I need some help with my herder/husky mix (we aren't totally sure what he is). He has great basic obedience: he waits for commands to go through doors, out of his kennel, in/out of vehicles, and to eat his meals, he has great recall, stays pretty darn well, knows to not put his nose in food or beg, and lots of other commands (both practical and for fun). All of this has been done through positive reinforcement.
The issue we have is that when he gets excited (e.g. playing, chasing squirrels, playing with other dogs), he has no self awareness. He will plow through you, or slam against you if he's not paying attention. He sort of tries to go around you when he's running, but he's slammed through me once and knocked me down. It's only gotten worse as he's gotten taller because he's now knee height and 70lbs.
He's also started pushing his nose into our faces and hands for attention. He will cause you to drop what you're holding, shove your hand off the mouse while I'm working, and just invade personal space.
What I am hoping for help with is how to address these behaviors without using "no" all the time. Any advice?
