Simple and intelligent piece you've wrote, deffinately sparked some visuals, I like it 👍

This is simple but beautiful, I love how you personified Constantinople as a “witness”. Makes me wish this was a whole story so I could read it

Simple, and gets your point across perfectly. Love it.

Beautiful imagery, and it leaves you wanting more. However, that let's the reader relate to it more.

i love how simple its while still getting straight to the point!!!

Simple and to the point while also being deeply profound. Good job!

Thanks for expanding on the theme - the allusions to historical places make more sense now!

If it's the treacherousness of the journey that is key to the expression of love here, then the poem opening with 'if love was measured in *distance*' seems to mislead; surely it's not the distance travelled, but the trials endured to cross it? Less 'I'd love you to the moon and back', more 'I'd crawl over broken glass for you'. As a reader, I'd certainly be more drawn in if that was made clearer.

I might also suggest mining this narrative seam a little more; who are these two people living in 330 B.C.? Is the love requited? Is this love *literally* going to be tested by this journey between Rome and Constantinople? Without this, all we have is a speaker implying that they love somebody/something a lot.

See what you could build it into. Keep at it!

Thank you so much for the thoughtful feedback! I totally understand your issue with the expression. I’d prefer not to try an explain it completely but I can say I guess I did imagine the setting approx 330 B.C. (although not explicitly implied) when the Hippodrome of Constantinople was “the” Hippodrome. To travel during that period from Rome to the Hippodrome would’ve been treacherous. I guess that’s my reasoning.

This seems to me to be a cute variation on 'I'd love you to the moon and back' (although Rome to the nearest hippodrome isn't *that* far, by comparison).

It's short and sweet, with some solid rhyming that is only slightly upset by the slant rhyme at the end.

Beyond that, there doesn't appear to be much else to dig into (please correct me if I overlooked something out of ignorance). Whilst immediately accessible, I think these sorts of expressions of love also risk coming across as trite; what does it mean to love someone the equivalent of 41.3 kilometres (distance between Rome and the Hippodrome of Domitian)? Or, if we're talking the Hippodrome of Thessaloniki, about 1,000km? Is that good? It's a long way to walk or drive. Short flight, though. I love you the equivalent of a short-haul flight. Constantinople (Istanbul) as a witness to your love... because it's near-ish Greece?

I suppose I just wonder what such an expression of love means, in reality.

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. Hi,

The Poem could be a bit longer and sing other witnesses, like stars too.

But a poem is the work of Heart, as much as the tongue of the heart says..

It's such a simple poem, just 4 lines, but it's so lovely. I love the use of historical metaphors in the poems!

I really like the compactness and meter to get across such a strong feeling

If love was measured in distance

and we had all the time in existence

I’d love you from Rome to the Hippodrome

with Constantinople our witness
