Unrequited
As I drive past the verdant fields
in the haze of the drying dew,
I can’t help but let my mind slip back to you.
All the late nights, conversations,
days and nights spent together,
all on repeat as I wonder.
Am I reading into this,
am I giving too much weight to your words;
to the sly compliments slipped into discussions,
to the embraces and the soul-felt ‘I love you’s’?
Have I misjudged the feelings,
letting my breathlessness and pounding heart
drown out and deafen my common sense?
I try to keep my focus but your eyes,
radiant blue stars blinding my senses,
the sun highlighting your blond halo,
that familiar smile that feels like home,
confounds my senses
and wraps my mind in endless adoration
evermore.
Have I finally gotten it right? Or will you forever remain unrequited?
