What is the wasp population like in Orlando?

Discussion

Asking because I am considering moving to Orlando from Canada. However, I am deathly afraid of wasp. We have the regular Yellow Jackets and the Short faced hornets here in Alberta. I’m fine with the hornets as they are usually pretty harmless, but I am really afraid of the yellow jackets

Wasp don’t really show up until June, but aren’t really noticeable. However they are everywhere and are extremely aggressive in August and September. As a measurement, I’ll say that there is usually about 5 wasp per garbage can in August-Sept while there is only about 1 or less in June and July. How is it like in Orlando?

I’m assuming they won’t be as aggressive since they don’t really have a horsing season due to the year round weather. But how many are there? And should I be worried?

Terrible. They are everywhere. They will nest in your bedroom and watch you while you sleep. Best to stay away.

Florida has every biting, stinging insect you can think of and we have no winter so they exist year round.

Well yes I expect them to be around year round. But are they any less active than colder regions? Since they don’t really have a hoarding season like they do here, I’m assuming they will be less aggressive, but is this true?

Bruh, just stay in Canada. You won't make it here. I guarantee you, the bugs are more aggressive here year round.

I can’t even really open my garbage can this time of year without wasps rushing in or out of it. And usually they are extremely aggressive this time of year

Your wasp don’t have a hording season, so I’m assuming there isn’t any particular season where they are more aggressive than the others. I’m just asking how aggressive they are and how plentiful they are

Every month is stinging, biting big season in Florida. Literally everyone has told you this in the thread.

every year its a war keeping the wasps from nesting right at our front and back doors, they chase us inside or to the car if we try to leave. atleast they die in the winter, but last year that was maybe two weeks wasp free

Any bug related questions are answered the same way. Assume we have more than most here because they don’t die off with the winter weather. You mentioned a specific season for them, and that’s not the case here. They are basically year round. Wasps, bees, yellow jackets, mosquitoes, no see ums, and more. Btw ants bite here. I know certain areas that’s not the case. I check around my windows and any outdoor furniture for wasps about every month. They are pretty good about finding new places to make their nests

I fucking hate wasps.

They are everywhere and different kinds too. We also have Mud Daubers, which they say they are more docile, but I don't believe them...

They are more docile but look 1000% more terrifying

Tell me you're not prepared to live in Florida without telling me you're not prepared.

Don't believe Disney, this isn't the most magical place on earth. That's marketing shit to get you to visit.

Normally just a matter of knocking down nests on the house a couple of times a year. Except for when I disturb their nest I've never seen them as being particularly aggressive.

I've never seen ours even bother with a trash can.

I get chased by wasps and bees just by pumping gas in my car at the gas station. It must be nice to only see wasps for one part of the year

They are bad right now, and always. This is funny timing because I have had a wasp problem IN MY BEDROOM for the last few days. Had to call maintenance to inspect for holes and they found a tiny gap in my window that they were coming in from.

For everyone here who seems to hate wasps as much as I do:

Wasps are pretty common. I've never been stung by one, but I've had to take down plenty of nests. IMO it's not THAT bad, just some wasp spray and a long stick to take the best down once they're dead.

Honestly, not as bad as they are up north. Midwest had way more. And they are way more docile and relaxed. I also don't see as insane amount of spiders as there are up north in areas, but that changes area to area (one free roaming cat can kill enough birds to up the bug and spider population in an area, and some area have a bunch of roaming cats and have some insanely big spiders).

It's really not as bad as it is up north in dryer areas. Florida has a lot of cockroaches though, which I can't stand but you might visit a restaurant or someone's house and see them (Universal City Walk had some gigantic cockroaches, and downtown has a bunch). Hornets aren't bad though, we have them but they are a lot more passive than they are up North.

I’m fine with Hornets as they usually are pretty tame. The ones we have here are big black ones with white heads, but they are usually very calm. The Yellow jackets here are just extremely aggressive. Cockroaches are not terrible, I just prefer to keep them out of my home

I was wondering if breeding Dragonflies would be a problem though, as I know they are a natural solution to wasps. However I’m not sure if it’s legal to breed dragonflies as a way to keep wasp out of your yard
